Cane Corsos going from #47 ten years ago to #11 now is one of the biggest climbs AKC has seen in a long time. That jump from 14th to 11th in just the last year is what pushes them to the edge of the top 10.
Why it's happening:
1. The protection dog moment. A lot of families want a real guardian, not just an alarm barker. Corsos hit that middle ground โ more family-oriented than a Presa or Dogo, more imposing than a Rottie or Doberman for a lot of first-time guardian owners. With concerns around home security, large property dogs are surging.
2. Social media made them visible. 5 years ago most people had never seen a well-bred Corso move. Now TikTok / IG is full of Corsos doing protection work, carting, dock diving, and just being goofy house hippos with kids. That versatility sells.
3. They finally aged out of the "rare breed" phase. AKC only fully recognized them in 2010. It takes 10-15 years for a breed to build a base of good breeders, mentors, and pet owners who evangelize. We're in that tipping point now where enough people know someone with a stable Corso.
4. Lifestyle fit for working breed people. People who used to get a German Shepherd or Mal for sport / personal protection are cross-shopping Corsos because they want more off-switch in the house but still want to do IGP, PSA, AKC Working events.
What it means for breeders:
Proven > just purebred now. When a breed is ranked #47, people will buy any puppy. At #11, buyers have options and they start asking for real differentiators โ AKC Champions, working titles, CHIC numbers, hips/elbows, DSRA, cardiac. Your angle of "proven titled Champions" is exactly what the market is going to reward as we knock on the top 10.
Two markets are forming. You have the high end โ health tested, titled, temperament tested, raised with structure, $3.5k+ and a waitlist. And you have the volume market โ Craigslist / Facebook groups pushing "Texas Purebred Puppies" with no testing. That second market is going to explode and then burn out, and it's going to create a lot of rescue / behavioral fallout.
More educated but also more demanding buyers. Expect more questions about socialization protocols, return contracts, training support, and equipment โ that's why you're seeing more people asking about Ruff Land, slat mills, etc. They watched videos and want that working dog setup from day one.
If you breed, this is the time to double down on ethics, not volume. Top 10 breeds get AKC scrutiny, more state legislation attention, and more vet costs from bad breeding. The breeders who hold their program tight, keep waitlists instead of pumping litters, and place on co-owns will be the ones still commanding top price in 3 years when the hype cools a bit.
Are you thinking about how to position your next litter with this surge? I can break down what buyers are specifically looking for right now in a top-11 breed vs. what they were accepting at #14.
