Here, we wanted to discuss some of the amazing tasks our techs handle daily that you may or may not have known was a part of their job, to recognize just how much effort and skill they put in daily ❤
When you bring your pet in for a routine surgery—like a spay, neuter, or dental cleaning—you might imagine the vet doing the bulk of the work 🩺. But behind those closed doors, there is an incredible team ensuring your furry family member stays safe, comfortable, and healthy ❤️. At the center of that care is your Veterinary Technician! 🐶🐱
Many people don't realize that vet techs perform roles equivalent to multiple human healthcare professionals—and one of their most crucial roles is acting as a dedicated Anesthetist and Surgical Nurse 💉🥼.
🩺 What Does an Anesthetist Tech Actually Do?
Before, during, and after any procedure requiring sedation or general anesthesia, a vet tech is constantly at work:
• 📋 Pre-Anesthetic Evaluation & Calculations: Before your pet goes under, techs review bloodwork, perform initial assessments, and calculate exact drug dosages tailored specifically to your pet's age, weight, and health status.
• 🫁 Induction & Intubation: They administer or assist with anesthetic medications and carefully place an endotracheal tube to secure your pet's airway, delivering oxygen and anesthesia gas safely.
• 📊 Continuous Vital Sign Monitoring: While the doctor is focused on the procedure, the tech is focused entirely on your pet! Minute by minute, they continuously monitor and record:

Cat Dental Care: Start at Home 🐱🦷

Dental care is an important part of keeping your cat healthy 🐈❤️, and one of the best things you can do at home is teach your cat to be comfortable with having their mouth touched and examined 🐾.

Start slowly and make it a positive experience ✨. Gently touch your cat’s face 😽, lift the lips, and briefly look at the teeth and gums. Reward them with praise, treats 🐟, or whatever they enjoy. With regular practice, your cat can become much more comfortable with having their mouth checked.

A healthy adult cat has 30 teeth 🦷, and those teeth should be clean and white, with healthy looking gums 🩺.

Why Routine Dental Exams Matter 🩺📅

Even if you brush your cat’s teeth regularly 🪥, brushing cannot prevent every type of dental disease. Some dental problems occur below the gumline or are caused by conditions that brushing alone cannot prevent.

Routine veterinary dental examinations allow us to look for problems early before they become painful or more difficult to treat 🔬. Cats are particularly good at hiding pain 🤫, so changes may not be obvious at home.

Signs That May Indicate a Dental Problem ⚠️

At home watch for:

Halitosis (bad breath) 💨

Drooling 💧

Red or swollen gums ❤️‍🔥

Changes in eating habits 🍽️

Dropping food while eating 🐟

Difficulty chewing 🥣

Pawing at the mouth 🐾

Decreased appetite 📉

💡 Remember: Cats can continue to eat even when they have significant dental pain. A cat eating normally does not necessarily mean their mouth is healthy. The absence of obvious pain doesn’t mean the absence of pain.

If you notice any of these signs, your cat should have a veterinary examination 👩‍⚕️. Professional dental cleanings are performed under anesthesia allowing the veterinary team to thoroughly clean the teeth, remove tartar and bacteria, including the areas under the gumline 🧼. Since much of the tooth is hidden below the gumline, dental x-rays are an important part of evaluation of your cat’s teeth and finding problems that may not be visible during an awake examination 📷. Depending on your cat’s dental health, professional dental cleanings may be recommended every 1-2 years 🗓️, or more frequently if needed.

The goal isn’t just a clean mouth, it’s a comfortable, healthy cat. Getting your cat comfortable with having their mouth handled at home, combined with regular veterinary dental examinations can help us catch problems early and keep those 30 teeth healthy as long as possible ✨.

Dental disease is common, painful, and often hidden 🕵️‍♂️. Don’t wait for your cat to stop eating before checking their mouth. By then, they may have been hurting for quite some time 😿.

But did you know that many common fall yard chemicals and rodent traps pose a serious threat to our furry family members? ⚠️🐶🐱

Here is what you need to know to keep your pets safe and tail-wagging all season long! 👇✨

🚨 Common Fall Chemical Dangers

Rodenticides (Mouse & Rat Poison) 🐀❌

The Danger: Fall is peak season for rodent poisons as mice try to move indoors. These products are explicitly designed to taste appealing to animals—which means dogs and cats will readily eat them too! 🐕
