Why Your Dog Resource Guards

Growling over food.
Snatching toys.
Freezing when you get too close.

That’s not your dog being “dominant” it’s called resource guarding.

Resource guarding happens when a dog feels the need to protect something valuable:
food • bones • toys • space • even people

Most of the time, it comes from insecurity, fear of losing access, or past reinforcement, not aggression for the sake of aggression.

The biggest mistake?
Punishing the warning signs.

If you punish the growl, you often remove the warning… not the problem. Training should focus on trust, structure, and clear boundaries, not force and conflict!

If your dog guards food, toys, or space, don’t ignore it.
Early training makes all the difference.

Obedience vs. Behavior Modification
They’re Not the Same

Teaching your dog to sit is obedience. Teaching your dog not to lunge at other dogs? That’s behavior modification.

Obedience focuses on commands like:
✔ Sit
✔ Down
✔ Place
✔ Recall
✔ Leash manners

Behavior modification works on deeper issues like:
Reactivity
Aggression
Anxiety
Resource guarding
Fear-based behaviors

One teaches skills. The other changes emotional responses and habits. Both matter, but solving serious behavior problems takes more than basic commands.

If your dog’s issue is bigger than “not listening,” they may need behavior modification, not just obedience training.

What Your Dog’s Body Language Is Trying to Tell You

Dogs are talking all the time—just not with words.

A wagging tail doesn’t always mean happy.
Yawning doesn’t always mean tired.
Avoiding eye contact isn’t always stubbornness.

Your dog may be saying:
“I’m uncomfortable”
“I’m overwhelmed”
“I need space”
“I’m unsure what you want”

Lip licking, pacing, stiff posture, pinned ears, freezing, and sudden barking are all signs your dog is communicating something important.

Good training starts with understanding what your dog is trying to say. The better you read your dog, the better you can lead them.

✨ Understanding Dog Logic ✨

You bought your dog 15 toys…
but they choose:
✔ the sock
✔ the stick
✔ something they definitely shouldn’t have

And somehow… that’s their favorite.

Dogs don’t make bad choices — they make rewarding ones. Training is teaching them that your choices pay off more than theirs.

Do you want a dog that makes better decisions (and leaves your socks alone)?
Message us — we’ll show you how! 💜

Most behavior issues don’t need extreme solutions.

They need:
✔ Clear rules
✔ Consistency
✔ Follow-through

That’s it. When your dog understands what’s expected, behavior starts to change fast.

Let’s fix it — message us to get started. 🤍

It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better

Ever feel like your dog’s behavior gets worse right when you start training? That’s normal.

It’s called a burst of behavior — when your dog tries harder because what used to work… suddenly doesn’t.

More barking.
More pulling.
More testing.

It’s not failure — it’s actually a sign the behavior is about to change.
Stay consistent. Don’t give in.

Need help working through those tough phases? Message us — we’ll guide you through it!

🐣 Happy Easter 🐰

While you’re enjoying the day, don’t forget:
Chocolate, candy, and big gatherings can be overwhelming (and dangerous) for dogs.

Have a safe and fun day! 🤍

What to Ask a Dog Trainer Before Booking

Before you hire a dog trainer, ask this:
“Will my dog listen outside my house?”

If the answer isn’t focused on real-world training, keep looking.

Other questions you should also ask:
• How do you handle behavior issues?
• Do you train the owner too?
• What happens after the program ends?

Good training isn’t just sessions — it’s results that last.

Looking for real results, and training that lasts?
