🌟 Luke 140 is officially back at the top with Boyd Martin after undergoing colic surgery and the long recovery road that follows. Boyd is the latest CCI4*-S winner on the US Equestrian Open of Eventing qualifier circuit, picking up the win with Luke 140 at The Fork at Tryon International this past weekend.

Sarcoid removal followed by cryotherapy and anti-virals on a gentle giant. We’ve been working on these Clydesdales for over 13 years and love helping them live their best life!

Grateful to Joint Pathology center for all their histopathology help they’ve provided along the way! Even though we “think” it’s a sarcoid. We send the specimen to confirm!

💪 We clarified the new USEF rule about ceterizine, but we can’t forget about Methocarbamol.

💪 What is methocarbamol?
Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant commonly known as the brandname Robaxin. It is typically prescribed for tying-up (extertional rhabdomyolysis), back soreness, muscle pain and muscle spasms.

💪 Why is methocarbamol a regulated USEF medication?
Methocarbamol has properties as a central nervous system depressant. Meaning it can cause sedation and relaxation on the brain and spine. And the side effects of methocarbamol use can include lethargy, ataxia and muscle weakness. The USEF classifies methocarbamol as a Category I quantitatively restricted drug. This means that methocarbamol is permitted to be in the horse up to a certain plasma concentration at the time of testing.

💪 What is the current USEF guidance for methocarbamol in competition?
Per the USEF:
🚥 If you are giving methocarbamol ONLY, suggested withdrawal time is the same: 12 hours before competition.
❌If you are giving methocarbamol PLUS other medications or supplements, suggested withdrawal is now 24 hours before competition.

💪 Always check with your veterinarian and the USEF regarding medication use prior to and during competitions.

Today we had an acute colic come in and after some rapid diagnostics discovered he had a strangulating small intestinal lesion requiring surgical correction.
Here is a picture intra-op of the strangulating lipoma on the jejunum (segment of small intestine). The dark red is the necrotic bowel. This was resected and the intestine reattached (anastomosis).
He’s recovering from the surgery and hopefully won’t look back!
