We’re sharing this important post today for one of our very own 💛🐾
Paisley has been coming to Greenbrier since she was just a puppy, and she’s truly one of the sweetest girls you’ll ever meet. Her family asked us to share her story to help raise awareness—and we’re so glad they did.
GDV (bloat) is a life-threatening emergency that can happen fast, especially in large, deep-chested dogs like Paisley. Knowing the signs and acting quickly can truly make the difference between life and death.
We are so incredibly thankful she received immediate care and is now home recovering and doing great 🩶
Please take a minute to read and share this post—you never know who it might help. 🐶💛
Paisley, a 5 year old Weimaraner, presented for retching and a distended abdomen - two signs you should never ignore!
We immediately took radiographs, which confirmed GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus or “bloat”).
From there, our team moved quickly:
•IV catheter, GI medications, pain management
•Surgery to correct the stomach torsion
•Spleen involvement ➡️ splenectomy
•Gastropexy to help prevent the stomach from twisting again
After surgery, Paisley’s bloodwork and vitals, including her ECG, were closely monitored. She continued to receive IV fluids, GI medications, and pain management. She did amazing, was able to be discharged the next day with pain medication, and has been doing great at home! 🩶🐾
💡A gastropexy can often be performed during your dog’s spay or neuter to help prevent GDV. Talk to your veterinarian about whether a gastropexy is right for your dog.
🚨GDV occurs when the stomach fills with gas (dilatation) and twists (volvulus), making it impossible for gas or fluid to escape, and decreasing blood flow. While smaller breeds (and cats in very rare cases) can experience GDV, it is most commonly seen in large, deep-chested dogs.
⚠️Signs include abdominal distention, unproductive retching, restlessness, abdominal discomfort, and hypersalivating. If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait - seek veterinary care immediately!
