The CPE Small Animal Medicine Station 2 isn’t just about getting to the right diagnosis. It’s about showing that you can prioritize, make critical-care decisions, and communicate an effective treatment plan under pressure.

🐾 No live animal is used in this station, but you should approach it as if you’re working a typical night shift in an emergency clinic.

You’ll have 35 minutes to complete the written portion, including your medical assessment, treatment orders, and prescription. Then, you’ll have 10 minutes for the oral portion, where you’ll explain your plan to a veterinary technician and answer questions about your case.

⚠️ Many candidates underestimate this station. The combination of critical-care considerations and a strict time limit can make it challenging, even when you know the medicine.

💡 One of the best ways to prepare? Write as many timed cases as possible. Practice working through cases from start to finish while keeping yourself within the 35-minute limit. The more you practice prioritizing what matters most under pressure, the more prepared you’ll feel on exam day.

Remember: This station is testing more than your ability to identify a diagnosis. It’s testing how you think, prioritize, treat, and communicate like a clinician.

How well do you know the feline alimentary diseases on the CPE?

From acute gastritis and hepatic lipidosis to foreign bodies and common GI parasites, these are diagnoses every candidate should be prepared to recognize and manage.

Use this list as a study guide, and remember to review the clinical signs, diagnostics, differentials, and treatment for each condition.

When can you register to take the CPE? 🤔

Once you have completed the BCSE, you can apply to take the CPE. However, you must also meet the surgical experience requirement before you’re eligible.

That means completing 6 surgical experience forms, with at least one documented dog spay, and making sure your experience meets the current requirements.

🐾 One important consideration: Obtaining the required surgical experience documentation can be difficult in the U.S. Because of this, some candidates use surgical experience from their university or travel abroad to complete the required experience.

⚠️ Don’t wait until the last minute! Surgical experience must fall within the 5-year period before your CPE. If your experience is older than 5 years, you may need updated documentation.

And there’s another piece of the puzzle: CPE dates are only released periodically, and some candidates may wait a year or more for an available date. Planning your surgical experience, BCSE, and CPE timeline early can save you a LOT of frustration.

⏱️ Time management matters during the CPE Necropsy Station.

Candidates have 90 minutes to perform the necropsy. Once those 90 minutes are up, you'll be instructed to stop the procedure and set down all instruments.

You'll then have an additional 15 minutes to complete the Necropsy Report Form, for a total station time of 105 minutes (1 hour and 45 minutes).

One important tip: You can complete portions of the report while you're performing the necropsy, but the necropsy itself must be finished within the initial 90 minutes.

Understanding the timing ahead of exam day can help you pace yourself and avoid unnecessary stress.
