Last week the chicks got moved to a modified dog kennel to ensure they have plenty of space as we wait for the rest of their feathers to come in. They’re officially in the awkward “teenage” stage where absolutely everyone in the history of ever has been a disgruntled mess. Chickens are no different.

It’s harder to get photos as the camera can’t see through the hardware cloth and they are becoming more interested in how shiny the lense is…

This is what happens when one chick gets ahold of a mealworm. There are more in the shavings, but they all want the worm he has.

These chickies are getting an eviction notice and moving into their new brooder, hopefully by the end of this weekend. Stay tuned!

Their feathers are coming in and they’re quickly outgrowing their current brooder.
We’ll be moving them to a larger one until the feather hardware is fully installed and they can live outside in the coop… which is still a work in progress… 😂

Yesterday my son asked me why I’d put rocks in the waterer, and I explained that like human babies chicks have nap attacks and will fall asleep in the middle of whatever they’re doing. The rocks keep them from accidentally drowning. (Give them a break, it’s their second day on the job.)

The 3 chicks were moved to the brooder this morning. They figured out food and water quickly, which believe it or not it is not always automatic.

They’re exploring their new space and finding the comfiest places for future naps.

At 9:30 this morning our very first Svarthöna chick hatched! There are still three eggs left, two of which are wiggling and will hopefully join their comrade soon.

Holding our breath over here! 🤞

We candled the Svart Höna eggs today. 4 out of the 12 are showing definite signs of growth, 6 maybes and 2 were definite no-gos. This is not uncommon. This breed tends to be difficult to incubate, the highest success rate usually being from broody hens, which is the route we’ll take in the future once.
We’ll check back on the maybes towards the end of next week before lockdown. We’re keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for a couple of late bloomers.

Today is incubation day 8 out of ~21. Saturday evening we’ll candle the eggs and see how many chicks are developing. That way we can pull out any unfertilized eggs and avoid having them go rotten and potentially contaminate the healthy ones.

I know they say not to count chickens before they hatch, so we’ll just say that around Monday the 19th we’ll hopefully start hearing some pipping from claustrophobic chicks ready to take on the world.
