There’s something incredibly special about seeing a full-circle moment come to life. 💙🐴

The foal pictured was conceived via embryo transfer. She is now an adult. Through our Equine AI program she is now pregnant with her very own foal! Watching these milestones unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

From the very beginning of her journey to now preparing to become a mama herself, we are so honored to have been part of her story. Congratulations to this beautiful mare and her wonderful owners as they await the arrival of this exciting new addition!

Moments like these remind us why we love what we do. 🐎✨

Today we give a shout out to Dr. Amy Dunn! She has been a veterinarian at West Dakota Veterinary Clinic for 5 years! Dr. Dunn first became part of our team in 2010 as an undergrad student and in 2021, she returned as an experienced doctor. She is a mixed animal practitioner and spends most of her time between small animal and equine in both medicine and surgery. She is certified in the essentials of animal chiropractic for both small animals and equine. She is also pursuing certification in acupuncture and will be offering those services later this year. We are so grateful to have her on our team. Thank you Dr. Dunn ❤❤❤

As we get ready to enjoy time outside with our pets, it is important to make sure they are protected against ticks. Ticks are second only to mosquitoes in the number of diseases they transmit. Disease-carrying ticks pose health risks to pets and people. The CDC reports that ticks in every U.S. state carry disease, and the number of tick-borne disease is increasing. To protect your pet from tick-borne diseases it is important to select the right preventative. It is critical to always choose products intended for the type of animal you are treating. Using dog products on cats or livestock products on pets can be deadly. We can help you understand your choices and make sure your pet is protected.

We use an ultrasound machine on a daily basis to aid us in making a diagnosis in our patients. Ultrasound is a form of imaging that allows us to look inside the body without surgery. It is a completely noninvasive technique. The ultrasound machine sends sound waves into the patient’s body, listens for echoes, and the echoes form a picture of what’s going on inside. Ultrasounds can give us information about organs in the abdomen, the chest and heart, tendons, and the eye for example. An ultrasound can help lead to a quicker diagnosis and often confirm whether or not we need to go to surgery.

As the grass starts growing in the pastures, it is important to carefully consider the possible transition from hay to grass. Laminitis in horses often relates to nutrition and diet. High amounts of sugars in grasses can bring about laminitis in horses susceptible to the disease. Horses that are susceptible should have no or limited grazing. Susceptible horses include overweight, easy keeping horses, horses with metabolic syndrome, horses that have foundered before and ponies are naturally more susceptible. During daylight hours, grasses make and store sugar and then use this sugar to fuel growth overnight. Plant sugars tend to be higher in the late afternoon and lower in the early morning. Plants also store sugar in times of stress such as during a drought or when temperatures fall below 40. For extremely sensitive horses, there is no completely safe time to graze.

We are here to be a part of your pet’s journey ❤️

Thanks to better care, pets are living longer now than they ever have before—and as pets get older, they need extra care and attention. Regular veterinary examinations can detect problems in older pets before they become advanced or life-threatening. They also can improve your pet's chances for a longer and healthier life.

During today's theme of "Plan for their care: Give them a lifetime of love," learn more about basic considerations when caring for senior pets. https://bit.ly/4cvcsDh
