Most families navigating a pet’s senior or geriatric years are doing it without a clear picture of what’s actually happening — or what’s genuinely possible. They’re managing changes as they appear, making their best decisions with incomplete information, and carrying a low-level worry that rarely gets addressed directly.

Working with Telos changes that. Not by removing the uncertainty that comes with an aging pet — that’s real, and it doesn’t disappear. But by giving you the knowledge, the framework, and the ongoing support to meet it with confidence rather than dread.

Noticing changes in your senior pet but not sure what to do? Telos's Core Support Plan provides the expert guidance & support your family needs most.

Many of my charges have complicated dental health in their advanced age. Even when when they’ve had many of of their teeth removed, daily brushing is still a best practice to maintain the healthiest mouth & comfort possible. I recommend caregivers of these pets use a soft/super-soft baby toothbrush. It’s gentler on any tender areas on their gums, easier to handle & yet still effective.

Clean the toothbrush well after each use, allow to dry. I always wear gloves to perform this caregiving.

I get questions about this every spring! It looks alarming, doesn’t it?

It's that time of year! This picture may cause concern and if you see this on your pet you also may be concerned. However, this picture actually is showing non-harmful black fly bites. Your dog may get these from laying in the grass or just from being outside and this usually occurs around the months of May and June. As long as the spots are flat and not itchy then there is no reason for concern and we will advise you to monitor your dog as these usually go away on their own. If you are ever not sure though feel free to call or send us an email with pictures of the spots.

With the short work week here, consider doing a little checking on those refills you might need on your pet’s prescription medication, supplements and food as Memorial Day Weekend approaches. Avoid the tension of running out of those prescriptions that your pets need and make a point to contact your vet’s office now to request or pick up refills.

Families with pets who are in fragile health or are receiving hospice or palliative care, this is especially relevant. If your pet’s condition has required a vet-approved increase in their dosage of meds recently to manage pain/overall comfort, know that it can be easy to overlook how quickly each refill gets used up than before. Check with your prescribing vet to be sure things are on track for the next few weeks before you’re caught by surprise and have a beloved pet on your hands with inadequate pain and/or anxiety management.

Also—for families working with me, please remember if your pet’s medication regimen has changed in any way, we’ll need to update your pet’s medication sheet including dosage amount/schedule/medication name etc. with signature in advance of your scheduled reservation.
