OPINION: AL - Beau's Law Is In Effect Now!

" In April of this year legislation called “Beau’s Law” was signed; it took effect on October 1st.It establishes minimum standards for dogs kept outdoors - enforceable standards that will protect dogs like Beau.

Provisions of the law include requirements for dogs to have shelter and continuous access to food and drinkable water. Any shelter must be fully enclosed with walls, a roof and a solid floor. It should offer protection from sun, rain, cold, have bedding in cold conditions and be large enough for the dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably."

Beau’s Law is Alabama’s first statewide statute establishing minimum care requirements for dogs kept outdoors. It is in effect NOW!

IN THE NEWS: PA - Bill establishing animal abuser registry passes Pa. Senate

"The proposed legislation to establish a statewide animal abuser registry in order to help prevent convicted abusers from obtaining more animals was approved by the Senate Oct. 6, according to Senate Animal Protection Caucus co-chair Sen. Rosemary Brown (R-40), who supported the measure."

IN THE NEWS: CA - Governor Signs Bill to Get Abused Animals Out of Shelters and Into Safe Homes Faster

"Animals rescued from abuse and neglect will have a clearer path out of crowded shelters and into safe homes under a new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom. Assemblymember Matt Haney’s (D-San Francisco) AB 2344 closes a gap in California law that can leave animals seized in cruelty and neglect cases stuck in shelters for months while their owners’ criminal cases move through the courts."

Animals rescued from abuse and neglect will have a clearer path out of crowded shelters and into safe homes under a new law.

IN THE NEWS: IA - Nearly 400 animals rescued from Iowa farm, owners arrested for neglect

"The animals rescued included 342 chickens, 18 sheep, six pigs, five goats, two rabbits, two geese, two kittens, one horse, and one duck. That's 379 animals that were taken into the care of the ARL, the organization announced on Friday, Sept. 25."

Two Marshalltown residents were charged with livestock neglect after nearly 400 of their farm animals were rescued.

IN THE NEWS: IA - USDA says it will be cracking down on dog breeders in Iowa and elsewhere

"U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins appeared at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa this week to tout the agency’s efforts to shut down puppy mills in Iowa and other states.

While at the ARL on Tuesday, Rollins said although the USDA inspectors used to visit a facility, cite violations, and then leave, 'those days are over. We are now in the active process of shutting down these puppy mills.'"

IN THE NEWS: IA - ARL caring for nearly 400 neglected animals after Marshall County rescue; horse, chickens euthanized

"The ARL’s rescue team worked into the evening, making multiple trips to bring animals to the organization’s Second Chance Ranch and Rescue Intake & Rehabilitation Center. Colvin said the ARL had been near capacity after a year of frequent large-scale intakes. The ranch, which the organization bought two years ago, helped make room for the rescued animals.

About 200 chickens were among those taken in. Colvin said many had mites and were thin, missing feathers, with some depleted of body fat. Staff treated the chickens for mites and are providing food and water as they regain strength."

The Animal Rescue League is caring for hundreds of animals rescued from a Marshall County property. Now, it needs supplies and volunteers to help with their recovery.

"The federal government should prevent these horrific outcomes, not allow animals to continue in these conditions for months if not years.

The Department of Agriculture licensed Iowa breeder Wuanita Swedlund three years ago. In the time since, the agency documented dogs at her facility suffering from untreated illnesses, painful injuries, and a lack of basic care, leading to multiple deaths. But the department chose to do nothing. It did not fine her, remove any dogs, or take her license away."
