On Wednesday we said goodbye to The Retic.

She came into our lives as a tiny hatchling in 2001, and from that moment on, she became part of our family. For more than two decades, she was a constant presence; through moves, changes, growth, joy, and loss. She watched generations of people come and go, taught countless lessons, sparked curiosity, and quietly left her mark on so many hearts.

We knew this day was coming. With an animal who has been with you for that long, you try to prepare yourself. You tell yourself you’re ready. Captive retics have a 15-20 year life expectancy and she was 26. But knowing doesn’t make it hurt any less. We are absolutely devastated. The emptiness she leaves behind is profound, and the grief feels heavier than words can explain.

She never had an official name. We believed it was bad luck to name her, and so she was simply “The Retic”, known and loved just as she was.

She was never “just a snake.” She was history. She was trust, a constant. She was awe and respect and a reminder of why we fell in love with these animals in the first place. She was magnificent. She helped shape who we are and what we’ve built, and a piece of us will always belong to her.

We know she meant a lot to this community too. If you have photos, stories, or memories of her, whether from years ago or more recently, we would be honored if you shared them here. Seeing her through your eyes would mean more to us than you know.

Thank you for loving her, remembering her, and holding space for us as we grieve. Rest easy girl.

We’re ringing in 2026 today, so we’re closed to celebrate and reset.

🦎🎆 Happy Independence Day from all of us at Tails & Scales! 🇺🇸🐍

Our crew is taking the day off to celebrate with sunbathing, fireworks, and extra snacks. We’re CLOSED today to enjoy the holiday, but we’ll be back to our regular hours tomorrow from 11AM to 6PM!

These little guys may look like they have a lot on their plates (and they do, with all that leaf munching), but they’re just here to keep it moving in the slow lane.
