🐾 Case Highlight: Speck 🐱🦷

Speck is an 11.5-year-old Domestic Shorthair who had been reluctant to allow an oral exam. We knew dental disease was present, so we performed a dental procedure under anesthesia to get a better look.

Unfortunately, we found severe inflammation throughout his mouth. Biopsies confirmed feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS)—a painful inflammatory condition where a cat’s immune system overreacts to plaque on the teeth.

Many cats with FCGS experience chronic oral pain, making eating, grooming, and even yawning uncomfortable. While professional dental cleanings and medications can help some cats, severe cases often require full-mouth tooth extractions to remove the source of inflammation and provide lasting pain relief.

Because of the severity of Speck’s disease and his lack of response to a dental cleaning, he’ll be undergoing full-mouth extractions with a veterinary dental specialist later this month.

We’re wishing Speck a smooth procedure and a much more comfortable future. 💙

Fun Fact Friday:

Kali, a 2yr old mixed breed, and Bonnie, a 6yr old Aussie mix, both display a condition called “heterochromia” where the eye color (iris color) is different. Each eye can be a different color, or one eye can have multiple colors. While this is a harmless condition, it can certainly be eye-catching.
