This is so important. If you have a problem, tell me!
✨ Your breeder can't fix a problem they don't know exist. ✨
This is a long read, but I feel it needs said as I'm seeing more and more of these situations.
If you buy a rabbit from a breeder and eventually have a problem with that rabbit, please tell your breeder. Maybe you feel like the rabbit wasn’t represented accurately in photos. Maybe you feel like you were misled about something. Maybe the rabbit has never really settled in and you just aren’t clicking with its personality. Maybe it developed behavior issues, became aggressive, isn’t what you expected structurally, developed a health concern, or something simply feels off compared to what you thought you were bringing home.
Your breeder cannot even begin to help, explain, troubleshoot, refund, replace, make something right, or simply learn from the situation if you never tell them there is a problem. I have heard SO many things about myself as a breeder. I’ve heard plenty about other breeders too. You know what so many of those situations have in common? The breeder apparently did something wrong but nobody ever actually told the breeder. I can guarantee you that if you message me and say, Hey, this is what’s going on. What can we do? I’m immediately going to start figuring out how I can help.
Earlier this year, I came across a comment from someone who had gotten a rabbit from me. They said the rabbit had become so bitey with them that they were considering culling it. That was a gut punch. It wasn't a gut punch because they said it, but rather because they never messaged and told me. Last I knew the rabbit was settling in and doing great. I do not tolerate that level of aggression in my program either. Had they reached out, I would have supported culling and would have completely refunded or put them as my top priority to send them a new rabbit on me.
I stand behind my rabbits, and I stand behind my customers. But I never got that opportunity. They never contacted me, and when I tried to reach out after seeing the comment, I discovered I had been blocked.
Breeders aren't mind readers.
Think about literally anything else you purchase. If your order arrives damaged, you contact the company. If your mechanic fixes something and the problem comes right back, you call the mechanic. If you get the wrong meal at a restaurant, you tell your server. You don't sit silently for six months and then tell everyone the restaurant refused to fix your order when they never knew there was a problem.
Rabbit breeders deserve that same opportunity to at least have the conversation. Yes, not every rabbit is going to be perfect. A junior that looked incredible here may mature completely differently than expected. Genetics don't always read our plans. A rabbit with a wonderful personality here may behave differently after moving into a completely different home, routine, environment, and handling style. Health issues can appear later that neither the breeder nor buyer could have predicted. Sometimes a rabbit and its new owner simply aren't a good personality match. Yep! Sometimes breeders make mistakes too. We can misjudge something. We can overlook something. We're human, but there is a HUGE difference between a breeder being given the opportunity to address a problem and refusing to do so and never telling them there was a problem in the first place.
I can't promise every rabbit that leaves here will be perfect for the rest of its life. I can promise that if something happens, I want you to tell me. You're not bothering me. You're not being difficult. I'm not automatically going to assume you're attacking me. I'd much rather receive an uncomfortable message that gives me the opportunity to help than stumble across a comment months later and realize there was a problem I never even knew existed. Good breeder/buyer relationships require communication from both sides.
Give your breeder the opportunity to stand behind what they produced. And if they don't? Then you actually have something worth talking about.
