Today we share the final chapter in the inspiring story of Nigel, an 8-year-old tripod African painted dog, whose story of perseverance inspired our community.
Born at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance in November 2017, Nigel was known for his playful personality, three-legged walk and mischievous habit of stealing food from his brothers, Teddy and Livingstone (Dave).
Nigel faced significant health challenges early in life, including severe hip dysplasia that required the amputation of his right hind leg in 2018. Thanks to specialized care from our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams, and plenty of support from his pack, Nigel adapted to life on three legs and continued to thrive.
In recent weeks, Nigel experienced increasing difficulty using his remaining hind leg. Despite supportive care, his condition continued to decline. After carefully evaluating his health and quality of life, our teams made the difficult but compassionate decision to humanely euthanize him.
Throughout his nearly nine years at DZCA, Nigel became a special example of the dedication and expertise that goes into caring for our animals. His playful personality and unique story left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Since African painted dogs' typical lifespan is 10 - 12 years, Nigel living to just shy of his 9th birthday is truly a testament to his spirit and the dedication of his care teams.

"From the time he was a little puppy, Nigel always had the gift of influence. His charismatic personality endeared him not only to his packmates but to staff and guests. He was incredibly intelligent and could use his charm to get what he wanted in most situations; he was a bit of a rascal in that way. An old coworker called him the king maker, because whoever had Nigel on their side got to run the pack. He was impressive not only for his personality and intelligence but also for his strength and perseverance. When Nigel wanted something, there was nothing that could stop him, which I really admired about him. In the end, Nigel used his magic to position himself at the top and rule the pack himself.
