Today is Ginger’s one year adopt-iversary with us, aka her birthday! We’ve learned a lot about her this year, and she’s settled into our family so well. I can’t advocate. For adopting an old dog enough… Ginger has been a joy. Even at 13 she’s really healthy and loving life! We’re so glad she’s with us. Adopt old dogs!! Go now, hurry!

Many of you tell me cute old dog photos are why you’re here with me. But the reality is, it’s not all adorable photos and happy tales. Some senior dogs struggle with grooming. Luckily, it’s not always the case. Copo, at 19, is still living a happy life. He’s old-man active, eating like a horse, and getting around well. He’s incredibly feisty and agile for his age, even though he looks terribly frail. BUT, grooming day is VERY difficult for him. Unfortunately it is not optional. He’s a maltipoo - without haircuts he would be painfully matted and those mats would limit his mobility. His mouth hurts and it’s not safe for him to have a dental. He snaps at anything that comes near his face. We cannot get his face done. At all. In fact, if I wasn’t willing to groom the parts of him that I can, the only option would be a sedated groom. At 19, that’s not a reasonable possibility. So, with the extreme patience of his people, treats, and the utmost caution to manage his comfort, we do the best we can. Copo is a lovely little boy, but I am not his favorite person… sadly. Working with dogs like Copo help me learn to let go of perfection in order help the older dogs who need a different approach.

Paco is the cutest old pup. At nearly 20, he is not able to tolerate the traditional grooming process any longer. Luckily I can monitor his comfort along the way and make changes as needed! The result is a happy senior dog who is no longer snappy and wearing a muzzle for his feet. Good boy, Paco!

Ok social media… do my favorite thing about you… help an old dog in need! Peyton is 12 years old and needs a new home. His mom is rehoming him because he’s not doing well with the new child. Don’t shoot the messenger, just help us find this sweet guy a child-free new home. According to the groomer who sees him, he’s a grumpy looking little muppet, but it’s 💯 a show. Peyton LOVES to snuggle and is a happy little guy.

A love letter through the years… I’ve known Angus since he was a puppy. He’s a senior now, but he still had a lot of skin to grow into when we first met. I remember the first time I tried to pick him up - in my memory this is how it goes: I lifted him firmly, and somehow only got an armful of skin and fur - his wiggly, happy, warm body actually stayed on the ground. 😆 He’s a wonderful guy; we’ve been friends ever since that first day, and every year of his life, he’s gotten sweeter and cuter, if that’s possible. Enjoy a few photos of us through the years…
