Something important is being considered for those of us who have senior pets: the AVMA is considering creating an official veterinary specialty for hospice and palliative care - a group called ACVHPM.

Right now, most vet training is built around diagnosing and curing. This new specialty would be different. It's for the stage when the focus shifts from "fixing" to comfort, dignity, and quality of life - and it would train vets specifically to support that, and to support us as caregivers too.

If you've ever felt like your vet wasn't quite equipped for that conversation, or wished there were more specialists trained in this kind of care, this is our chance to say so.

That giant yawn is doing you a giant favor - showing you your old dog's teeth.

Dental trouble is one of the most common things I experience in living with old dogs, and one of the most easily missed. Worn-down or loose teeth, a red line along the gums, brown buildup. Even while your dog isn't showing signs of pain or poor oral health, the mouth is often hurting.

And old-dog breath. We often wave it off, but a genuinely bad smell can be serious, not normal age. A mouth that hurts eventually changes how your old pup eats. She may look at her food and walk away, drop kibble, or pick off the soft food topper and leave the crunchies.

Make it a habit to look check your older dog's mouth every week or two. Lift the lip, look at the back teeth and the gumline, and take a sniff. If something has changed, mention it to the vet at your next visit. That's exactly what they are there for!

People ask when a dog becomes a senior like there's a birthday for it.

There isn't. A great dane can be old at five, six, or seven. A small terrier at seven is barely middle aged and fully intends to outlive your car.

Breed matters, size matters, and the individual dog matters most of all. I've groomed twelve-year-olds who bounce and eight-year-olds who need every accommodation I have.

So stop watching the calendar and start watching her. How she gets up off the floor. Whether she still shakes off after a bath. Whether she sits, or just stands, because sitting is work now.

The calendar tells you her age. Only she can tell you how she's doing.

Quick summer safety reminder for the senior dogs in your life. Pavement gets hot fast, and older paw pads are often more fragile and less forgiving than they used to be. If it's too hot for the back of your bare hand for five seconds, it's too hot for their paws. Early morning or evening walks, shade breaks, and fresh water nearby go a long way. Sunday, soft and honest. 🩶 Loving an old dog means signing up for a slow goodbye you can already see coming. People ask how we do it — why choose the gray muzzles when the time is so short. But that's exactly it. Knowing the time is short makes every ordinary moment sacred: the sigh as they settle against you, the slow tail wag, the weight of a graying head in your lap. There's no agenda today for your old dog.

She takes her time getting up. So do you. The coffee gets poured. She wanders over and checks whether anything fell on the floor. It didn't. She forgives you for it anyway.

Sunday's the day she gets the most of you. No appointments. No leaving for hours. No coming home to a face pressed against the window. You get to be in the same room with her for most of the day, and she gets to be the dog who follows you from the kitchen to the couch to the porch and back to the kitchen.

That following is the whole thing.

She's choosing to be wherever you are. That's the relationship in its simplest form.

Take the long Sunday with her. Pour the second cup of coffee. Let her flop on your feet. There's nowhere more important for either of you to be. ♥️

Is the way your dog eats changing the older she gets? Maybe she stands at the bowl and thinks for a minute instead of just devouring immediately. Or she eats half, walks away, and eventually finishes it later. Maybe she only wants warm food, or wants a topper when kibble was fine for years. Or, she prefers brunch over the wake-you-up-at-6am breakfast she demanded for your first 12 years together.

A dog who used to inhale her dinner and now grazes is telling you something. Maybe it's her teeth, her stomach. Sometimes it's her joints or muscles - the bowl on the floor is suddenly a longer way down for a stiff neck, elbows or back. Sometimes she just doesn't smell it as well as she used to.

None of this is "she's just getting old." Each piece is information worth noting.

Mention it to your veterinarian at the next visit. And consider raised food and water bowls for your old pup. That one small change can make a large impact. It doesn't have to be a fancy new raised feed and water station... Depending on your dog's height, you can use a shoe box that was destined for recycling, a couple of books stacked up, a small plastic container. Get creative! Your old dog will appreciate it.

A Sunday walk with an old dog is a magic like no other. It's slower, sweeter, more precious. You have the opportunity to slow down, appreciate life and enjoy your old pup for another day.

She's not in a hurry. She has nowhere to be. Sniffing the air is all that matters until she comes to that perfect patch of grass. And she can watch that bunny for half the day.

Let her show you the block at her speed.

Stand where she stands. Look at what she's looking at. Appreciate the breeze the way she does.

The walk is not where you're going. The walk is who you're with.
