— Rattlesnake Safety For your Pet —

🚨 What to Do If Your Dog is Bitten by a Snake! 🐍 Stay calm and follow these steps to ensure your furry friend's safety:

📞 Call your vet ASAP for guidance on next steps and treatment options. Provide details about the snake's appearance if possible.

🐾 Keep your pet calm and still to slow down the spread of venom through their bloodstream. Carry them if necessary to minimize movement.

🚑 Seek immediate medical attention from an emergency vet clinic or animal hospital equipped to handle snakebite cases.

⏰ Time is crucial, so don't delay in getting your dog the help they need. Every minute counts in saving their life.

💉 Avoid attempting to suck out the venom or applying a tourniquet, as these can worsen the situation and cause additional harm.

💦 If possible, identify the snake species, but don't put yourself or your pet at risk in the process. Take note of its color, size, and markings from a safe distance.

🧡 Offer comfort and reassurance to your dog during this stressful time. Your presence can help keep them calm and ease their anxiety.

🚗 Safely transport your pet to the vet, minimizing movement and stress along the way. Use a blanket or towel to handle them gently.

🏥 Be prepared to provide information about your dog's health history and the circumstances of the bite. This will help the vet assess the situation more effectively.

Mishka, a beautiful and incredibly sweet Siberian Husky, was treated at our hospital last week after a rattlesnake bite. We are so happy to share that he is now home recovering and doing wonderfully! ❤️

His mom, Nancy, shared this update with us:
“Thanks everybody at the Emergency Pet Clinic of Longmont! Poor Mishka got bit by a stupid rattlesnake on Monday. They took great care of him and he’s home now healing!”

Stories like Mishka’s are an important reminder to stay alert outdoors — even with Colorado’s unpredictable weather. This is believed to be our third rattlesnake bite case already this year. Curious pets can encounter rattlesnakes quickly on walks, hikes, or even in backyards.

We are so grateful Mishka is recovering well and thankful to Nancy for trusting us with his care. He truly is such an amazing boy! 🐾
