Sprout City Farms Cultivating educational urban farms to engage & strengthen communities, and root farmers in the city

Mission & Vision

Sprout City Farms builds educational urban farms to engage communities, strengthen neighborhood resiliency, and root farmers in the city. We envision a thriving local food system supported by a network of accessible city farms which nourish, and are nourished by, their surrounding communities. Our farms serve as a platform for education, health, food justice advocacy, ecological

stewardship, community wealth building, vocational training, and neighborhood resiliency. Guiding Principles

Sprout City Farms believes that a thriving local food system is the foundation for healthy, resilient communities. We strive to ensure food-secure communities by developing and strengthening the local food system. We believe in…

Creating opportunities for residents of our farm communities to have equal access to fresh produce and the knowledge of how to produce it themselves. Caring for the land we farm in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible way, focusing on small-scale organic methods that encourage biodiversity, soil building, pollinator protection, and cultural heritage. Cultivating engaging community spaces where residents of all ages come together to build relationships around food. Creating opportunities for urban farmers to make a living growing food for their communities. Conserving scarce urban lands and/or maximize the potential of underutilized urban land for food production. Developing and leading a coalition of urban agriculture organizations to grow the local food movement and form a training pipeline for aspiring farmers and food systems advocates. We recognize that Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute), Tséstho’e (Cheyenne), hinono’eino’ biito’owu’ (Arapaho), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ peoples are the traditional stewards of the unceded lands we are farming.

At our first Lunch-&-Learn at Mountair Park Community Farm (MAP), Beekeeper Bryan come out and teach our team and volunteers all about bees! 🐝 🐝 We suited up to get up close and personal, identifying the pollen (protein) and nectar (carbs) in the hive and even packed onto the bees themselves! As the queen lays eggs, the male drones get ready to fly out and mate, while the workers each have a role depending on how old they are. This super organism is vital to supporting healthy ecosystems, and we are proud to have this partnership at MAP to help nourish our neighborhoods! Bryan even let us dig in and try some nectar right from the hive- yummy! 😋🍯

There’s nothing quite like a tiny chick to remind us how magical science can be!

For three weeks, these 2nd graders have been caretakers. Checking temperature, tracking humidity, and counting down the days. This week, all that hard work turned into soft, peeping baby chicks! 🐣🐣🐣

Checking the votes It looks like we are welcoming Rocko, M.s E, and Chirpy to our farm family! 😍

Feed the soil to feed the plants!

Last week the crew at MAP were finishing up adding minerals to the soil. After testing the soil, we make sure to add specific nutrients into the soil to help bring it back in balance. This helps us make sure we are adding what is needed and not adding nutrients that we already have too much of. We weigh out the individual minerals, and then mix them all together before spreading them in the field.

Can you guess what the blue mineral is in the first picture?

Every year, we kick off the season with a land blessing ceremony at each farm. We are so grateful to Beverly of Hummingbird Sacred Smoke and Mya of Into the Smoke for guiding us through making commitments and living into the practice of being in open communication with the land and each other 💚🙏🏼🙏🏽🙏🏾

We each wrote letters reflecting on our needs and intentions, which we then buried with the land. They reminded us to not be too hard on ourselves. That our ancestors want to help us fulfill what they left unfulfilled. To treat the land as a partner who receives our messages and gifts (and yes, sweat and tears too), and blesses and transforms us in return.

Some reflections from team members:
✨I am often thinking back to it and how we want to work with the land with respect and gratitude and reciprocity. Making the space for blessing the land felt very necessary and impactful for how we want to approach this new season on it together.
✨I felt very connected to the farm and to our team. I think I will often access that memory as a reminder that our work is also a spiritual practice. What a beautiful way to start the season.
✨The land blessing was so special and such a transformative experience… that gave me a sense of belonging and that I am on the right path. I really appreciate making the mindful connection to the land.
✨The ceremony was perfectly intimate... It allowed everyone to let their guards down, listen and absorb the teachings, and connect to their inner child to recognize inner power. It was incredibly moving to witness them cleanse the land and its stewards with such intention and expertise. What a wonderful thing to be apart of.
✨They bring true magic and wisdom to the farm. I walked away feeling lighter and more connected with myself, my heart, and my coworkers. I think we can easily get swept away with our busy day to days and these women showed me how to ground myself and look at the whole picture through a different lens. It is truly a blessing to be in the presence of Beverly and Mya.
✨I’m really grateful for the time we shared and for the wisdom of the ladies.
✨Such a cool thing to be a part of!!!!

Every Drop Counts 💧

It should be no surprise that we take a lot of care to get water to our crops, and it’s an ongoing process. Seeing standing water in an irrigation box is a sure sign that there’s a leak somewhere that needs attention. After tightening up all the connections, we were still having an issue. We finally found the leak when we took apart a solenoid valve (which opens and closes to let water through) and found a small piece of debris keeping it from fully closing.

This took much longer than we anticipated, but it felt good to find the problem. It may sound trite, but it’s true that every drop of water matters, and we want to ensure we aren’t wasting any because of leaks.
