Sniffing is your dogs version of therapyšļø
Sniffing activates a dogās brain and releases serotonin and dopamineš§ . It stimulates the GABA neurons in the olfactory region, which helps regulate anxiety and overstimulation. The easiest thing to do on a walk is let your dog sniff.
For dogs who are reactive, lack confidence, or rely only on sight⦠building up sniffing skills is so important. A lot of people donāt realize that their dogs nose is their worst sense. Smell is something that we can teach them to build up!
I play nose games with every single dog that I train, whether itās a board and train or a lesson program. It builds confidence by letting your dog problem solve and have lots of wins!
If you have a dog that gets overwhelmed easy, this one is for you. If you have a dog that barks at every single person that comes in the door (even if itās someone they see everyday), this one is for you. If you have a dog that is absolutely terrified when they step outside, this one is for you. You may see a pattern here (spoiler alert: itās for every dog).
I personally taught Easton to find specific scents and weāre looking to do trials in the future. Watching him pick up a scent and actively seek it⦠itās the coolest thing to watch. He is able to find anything from: rosemary, peanut butter, thyme, and even medication. When he finds the scent, even he knows he is the š©.
