When you get a dog but weren’t expecting them to be a freelance excavator, it can be frustrating😅

Here’s some tips to try and curb that behavior. If you have a breed that loves to dig, like terriers or dachshunds, giving them a proper place to fulfill their digging needs is most helpful. Try giving them a ‘dig pit’, most people use a kids sandbox, that way they have a specific place to do their digging away from your precious flowerbeds.

Door manners for the win🙌

Does your dog think an open door is an invitation to run through? Not only is that poor manners, it’s also very dangerous. Teach your dog that they have to wait for your permission to exit doorways - it’s a life saver!

Keeping a leash on your puppy indoors may seem unusual to most people, but it can be a life changer!

By having a leash on your puppy inside, it’s easier to ensure they don’t run off to have secret potty accidents. In case of an accident, the leash makes it easier to rush them outside.

If your puppy is still learning the ways of the world, the leash makes it easier to redirect them onto appropriate activities if they start getting into things they shouldn’t (e.g., shoes, socks, kids’ toys).

Once your puppy seems to understand the expectations you’ve set at home, try a ‘leash-free’ test run. Remember, it’s okay to backtrack! If you notice your puppy regressing when given extra freedom, it’s okay to put the leash back on.
