Cardentoā€™s Story

Cardento was a gorgeous Grand Prix gelding who had come all the way from Germany. After an incredible career, he was happily retired and living a comfortable life. He should have been able to simply enjoy his golden years. Instead, a tragic accident involving a ā€œhorse safeā€ hay ring changed everything on his 20th birthday.

Cardento had degenerative suspensory issues in his hind legs, along with an underlying genetic condition affecting his bones. DNA testing revealed that he was missing an amino acid essential to normal bone development, which left his bones more vulnerable to breaking.

This is the heartbreaking reality of horsesā€¦ sometimes we can do everything we believe is right. We can buy the products marketed as safe. We can provide excellent care, comfortable retirement, and everything they could possibly need. And sometimes, tragedy still finds them.

There is no such thing as completely risk-free when it comes to horses. Even something designed and marketed to be horse safe can become dangerous under the wrong circumstances.

This is exactly why farmers and livestock owners have no issue shooting unwelcome dogs on their property. This stallion is currently fighting for his life after trying to protect his herd from a dog attack. He managed to save all but one foal.

One of the dogs was shot and killed after approaching police. The other was caught and returned to its owner.

This is why the idea of a ā€œthree-strike ruleā€ is ridiculous when it comes to livestock attacks. The three-strike method should ONLY apply when a dog has not killed or seriously injured another animal. If a dog is allowed to kill livestock three separate times before meaningful legal action can be taken, then the system has already failed the animals, and the people responsible for protecting them.

People love to say, ā€œItā€™s not the dogā€™s fault,ā€ or ā€œJust call animal control.ā€ But while everyone is debating whose responsibility it is, livestock are being chased, injured and even killed. Horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and other animals donā€™t get a second chance after a deadly attack.

Hopefully, this tragedy is a wake-up call. Dog owners need to understand that allowing their dogs to roam isnā€™t harmless. One loose dog can cause thousands of dollars in damage, unimaginable suffering, and death in a matter of minutes. These ponies are now onto a better life with my friend, and amazing rehabber, Kelsie. Many people donā€™t want to send their animals to a kill pen, but they donā€™t know where else to turn. If your horse is thin or simply in a situation you can no longer manage, donā€™t let fear of judgment stop you from asking for help.

Our goal isnā€™t to punish owners. Our goal is to help animals. We care far more about the animalā€™s future than we do about pointing fingers.
