If you want consistent eggs from your Coturnix quail…
light is non-negotiable 👇

☀️ They need 14+ hours of light every day
→ This can be natural, artificial, or a mix of both

Without enough light:
❌ Egg production slows down
❌ Or stops completely

💡 How to fix it:

If you’re not getting enough daylight, just add supplemental light 👇

✔️ LED shop lights (simple and affordable)
✔️ Clamp lights with bulbs
✔️ Basic LED bulbs on a timer

👉 Set a timer so your birds consistently get 14–16 hours of light daily

⚠️ Pro tip:
Keep it consistent—turning lights on/off randomly can stress your birds

👉 Dial in your lighting…
and your egg production usually follows.

Most people don’t struggle with quail because they’re hard…
They struggle because of a few simple mistakes 👇

Here are 5 beginner mistakes—and how to avoid them:

❌ 1. Overcrowding Hutches
Too many birds in a small space = stress, pecking, and poor egg production

👉 Fix:
Give your birds enough room and a well-designed setup that keeps them calm and consistent

❌ 2. Wrong Feed
Quail aren’t chickens—they need higher protein to grow and lay properly

👉 Fix:
Use 18–22% protein (gamebird or all-flock feed)

❌ 3. Skipping Dust Baths
No dust bath = dirty feathers, stress, and unhappy birds

👉 Fix:
Provide a coarse sand bath regularly (not fine/play sand)

❌ 4. Ignoring Temperature Needs (Brooder Stage)
People treat quail chicks like chickens…that’s a mistake

👉 Fix:
Start chicks around 95°F and gradually reduce weekly
→ Too cold = piling and death
→ Too hot = stress and dehydration

❌ 5. Poor Predator Protection
This one costs people their entire flock

👉 Fix:
Use secure wire (like hardware cloth) and protect from:
• Raccoons
• Snakes
• Rats

👉 Get these 5 things right…
and you’ll be ahead of most beginners.

Quail eggs may be small…
but they’re packed with benefits most people don’t realize 👇

🥚 Nutrient-Dense
Higher yolk-to-white ratio = more nutrients per bite

🥚 Rich Flavor
Slightly creamier and richer than chicken eggs

🥚 Fast Production
Coturnix quail start laying in just 6–8 weeks

🥚 Small Space Friendly
You can produce a steady egg supply—even in a backyard

🥚 Great for Homesteaders
Quick turnaround, consistent laying, and efficient setup

👉 Bottom line:
They’re small—but incredibly productive and practical.

If your Coturnix quail are 9, 10, even 11 weeks old and you’re not getting eggs…
don’t panic—but DO check these 3 things 👇

☀️ 1. Light
They need 14+ hours of light daily
→ Natural or supplemental
Without it, they simply won’t start laying

🌾 2. Feed
Your protein matters more than you think
→ Aim for 18–22% protein
→ Gamebird feed or all-flock feed works best

⚠️ 3. Stress
This is the one most people miss
→ Too many males
→ Predator pressure
→ Loud environments
→ Overcrowding

Stress can delay laying—but here’s the good news 👇
👉 Once they start laying…they usually stay consistent

Dial these 3 in, and you’ll almost always see results.

A sandbox is GREAT for quail…
but the wrong sand can cause real problems 👇

❌ Play sand (fine sand)
• Too dusty
• Can cause respiratory issues
• Clumps easily

👉 What we use instead:
✔️ Coarse sand (like construction sand)

Why it works better:
✔️ Less dust
✔️ Better for natural dust bathing
✔️ Safer for their respiratory system

Quail LOVE a good dust bath—but only if it’s set up right.

If you’re wondering what to feed your quail at each stage—here’s exactly what we do 👇

🐣 Weeks 0–6:
We feed Kalmbach Turkey & Gamebird Start
→ High protein for strong growth and development

🐥 Week 7 (transition week):
We switch to a 50/50 mix of:
• Kalmbach Turkey & Gamebird Start
• Kalmbach Flock Maker

→ This helps them adjust without stress

🥚 Week 8 and on:
We move to 100% Kalmbach Flock Maker
→ Supports laying and long-term health

Most people think bigger = better when it comes to quail cages…
but that’s not always true 👇

There’s a danger zone when it comes to enclosure height:

⚠️ Between ~24 inches and 6 feet

Here’s why:
Quail have a natural “flush” instinct—they shoot straight up when startled.

In that height range, they can:
❌ Hit the top of there enclosure hard
❌ Injure their neck or head
❌ Even die from the impact

👉 Safer options:
✔️ Keep cages low (under ~18–24 inches)
✔️ Or go tall enough (over 6 feet) that they can’t hit the top with force

This one simple adjustment can save your birds.

“If they’re so small…are they even worth it?”

Here’s what most people don’t realize 👇

🥚 Size:
Yes, quail eggs are smaller…
…but you’ll usually get MORE eggs per day than chickens.

🥚 Taste:
Very similar—but many people say they’re richer and creamier.

🥚 Nutrition:
More yolk per bite = nutrient-dense in a small package.

🥚 Efficiency:
Quail mature fast, lay early, and take up way less space.

🫵 Bottom line:
They may be small…
…but for backyard and urban setups, they punch way above their weight.

Why quail?

Because for many backyard families — especially those living inside city limits - they simply make more sense.

We raise Coturnix quail in a neighborhood setting, and they've proven to be one of the most practical livestock choices for small spaces. They're significantly quieter than chickens, they thrive in compact hutches, and they don't require a large run or elaborate coop setup to be productive.

But the real reason we raise them isn't just convenience.

It's output.

Fast maturity.
Consistent egg production.
Efficient meat birds.

All from a small footprint.

If you're preparing to raise quail, here are the foundational things you need:

• Housing: A simple rabbit-style hutch works great, or you can build a custom setup. They don't need a massive structure - they need good airflow, protection, and smart design.

• Bedding: In warmer months, we run our hutches without bedding to maximize airflow and keep things dry. In winter, I like to add deep straw to the enclosed section for insulation. Coturnix are hardy (handling extremely cold temps), but thoughtful management makes things easier.

• Feed & Water: Constant access to clean water is non-negotiable. We use gravity-fed waterers and low-waste feeders to keep things efficient. (I've shared our setup in previous videos.)

• Nutrition: Coturnix are gamebirds, which means they require higher-protein feed than standard chicken rations. Proper nutrition directly impacts growth and egg production.

That's it. You don't need acres. You don't need a barn. You need structure and consistency.

If you've been on the fence about raising quail, ask yourself this:

Are you avoiding them because of real obstacles — or just uncertainty?
