Central Florida Equine would like to share an important update with our community.

In a few weeks, Dr. Rachel Benfield will be transitioning to a veterinary practice in North Carolina, where she’ll be closer to family and able to begin an exciting new chapter.

We are incredibly grateful for the care, compassion, and dedication she has shown to our patients and clients during her time with us. Her contributions have made a lasting impact, and she will be truly missed by our team and many of the horses she’s helped along the way.

As she moves on to this next opportunity, our doctors and staff will continue to provide seamless coverage for all appointments, ongoing cases, and emergencies. If you have any questions about your horse’s care or scheduling, our office is always here to help.

Please join us in wishing Dr. Benfield all the best as she heads on to her next adventure!

If you guessed Cooper for our last “Guess that snoot”, you’d be right! Cooper is Dr Adkins’ 4 legged assistant. And while he may not be the oldest of our furry crew (Moose holds that honor), he is our longest employed Vet truck dog for 8 whole years! He happily enjoys his salary of peanut butter and ear scratches

Here’s another “Guess that snoot!”

This one has quite the large nose that can catch all the scents. You may see him out on the road and always enjoys a good scratch.

Who do you think this impressive nose belongs to?

🐴✨ Equine Gastroscopy! ✨🐴

Did you know that equine gastric ulcers are one of the most common health issues in horses? Studies suggest that a large percentage of performance horses (and even many pleasure horses) are affected.

Have no fear, Central Florida Equine is equipped to perform gastroscopy at your farm! We bring advanced diagnostic care directly to you and your horse!

🔍 What are the signs of gastric ulcers?

- Poor appetite or picky eating
- Weight loss or difficulty maintaining condition
- Behavioral changes (grumpiness, resistance under saddle)
- Poor performance
- Mild/recurrent colic

Because these signs can be subtle, the only definitive way to diagnose gastric ulcers is through gastroscopy and we’re proud to offer this service right from our ambulatory clinic!

🩺 What is gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy allows us to safely and directly visualize your horse’s stomach using a specialized camera (gastroscope). This helps us:

✔ Confirm the presence of ulcers
✔ Determine severity
✔ Tailor the most effective treatment plan

💬 Not sure if your horse needs to be scoped?
Give us a call! We’re happy to discuss your horse’s symptoms and help determine if gastroscopy is the right next step.

💥 April Special: 10% OFF Gastroscopy Services! 💥

Now is a great time to get answers and help your horse feel their best heading into spring and competition season.

❄️ Cold Weather Tips From Central Florida Equine ❄️

While it has certainly been chilly recently, a true arctic blast will be sweeping across Central Florida this weekend. All of our Veterinarians have lived in more northern states and have advice for horse care in winter weather!

🐴 Shelter Makes a Difference

Wind chill is often tougher on horses than the temperature itself. A stall or simple three‑sided run‑in shed offers protection from wind and rain.

🧥 Blanket With Purpose

Not every horse needs a blanket. Age, body condition, coat thickness, and health all matter. If your horse does need one, make sure it fits well and stays dry.

🌾 Hay = Heat

Forage is your horse’s natural furnace. Offering extra hay helps them generate body heat from the inside out. Slow feeders help keep hay available longer.

💧 Encourage Drinking

Cold water can reduce intake, which increases colic risk. Slightly warmed water or safe tank heaters can make a big difference in hydration.

🍎 Use Grain to Boost Hydration

Water can be added to their regular grain (if they will eat it that way) to encourage proper water intake. Now is NOT the time to try a feed they do not normally eat. We’re looking at you bran mash. 👀

🧹 Dry Horses Stay Warmer

A wet horse is a cold horse. After rain or a sweaty ride, ensure they’re fully dry before turnout. Coolers or wicking sheets help speed things along.

❤️ Extra Eyes on Seniors & Hard Keepers

Older horses, thin horses, and those with metabolic conditions may need additional support.

If you’re unsure what’s best for your horse, Central Florida Equine is always here to help!

🎄🐴 The Equine Vet’s Long Winter Nap 🐴🎄
(A holiday thank-you from Central Florida Equine)

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the shed,
Not a horse was colicking (we triple checked!), it’s been said.
The owners were hopeful, the barns calm and bright,
Praying the Vet wouldn’t get called out tonight.

The horses were nestled all snug in their stalls,
Dreaming of peppermints, carrots, and hay balls.
And we in our truck, with our gear in the back,
Daring to dream of a long winter’s nap.

But before we doze off with a sigh and a smile,
We thank every client who’s gone the extra mile!
For your trust, your kind hearts, your calls through the year,
You’ve made our vet rounds full of holiday cheer.

For the midnight calls: “He’s acting so bizarre!”
(Translation: he’s galloping laps like he’s in NASCAR.)
For the horses who greet us with mud up to their ears,
And the ones who’ve dodged dewormer for twelve solid years.

For the old lesson gelding who limps until Bute is in sight,
And the mares who schedule colics *always* after 5pm Friday night.
For the minis who plot things we still can’t explain:
We love them, we do… but they’re clinically insane.

So here’s to your ponies, your geldings and mares,
To the barns full of laughter and the hours of care.
May your season be peaceful, NO emergencies in sight,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! 🎅✨
