Sand Colic in Central Florida: What Horse Owners Need to Know

Central Florida’s beautiful sandy soil is great for trails… not so great for horse guts. Our horses graze low, nibble dropped feed, and snuffle around in sandy paddocks — all of which can lead to sand accumulation in the digestive tract. Over time, that buildup can cause large colon irritation, diarrhea, weight loss, or even full‑blown sand colic.

🌾 Horses pick it up when:

• Eating hay or grain off the ground
• Grazing short or overgrazed pastures
• Sniffing or licking sandy surfaces
• Drinking from low or sandy water troughs

Even small amounts add up over weeks!

🛡️ Management Techniques to Reduce Sand Intake

• Feed off the ground — Use mats, tubs, or raised feeders to keep hay and grain out of the sand.
• Offer free‑choice hay or slow feeder options — More forage time means less “filter feeding” of sandy pasture.
• Use psyllium strategically — Monthly or targeted psyllium can help move sand through the gut.
• Improve pasture cover — Taller grass = less sand ingestion.
• Check water sources — Keep troughs on mats or concrete pads to prevent sandy bottoms.

🔍 How it is Diagnosed

• Sand can sometimes be heard in a horse’s abdomen during a physical exam
• A sand test using a Ziplock Bag or Glove. However, a negative test doesn’t always mean there is no sand!
• in severe cases, an X-ray of the abdomen can show the sand accumulated in the large intestine

⚠️ When to Be Concerned

Watch for:

• Loose, sandy diarrhea
• Chronic mild colic
• Weight loss despite good feed
• Reduced appetite
• Lethargy or belly discomfort

If you’re seeing these signs, our Veterinarians at Central Florida Equine can help determine whether sand is part of the problem!

🐴📦✨ Happy Amazon Prime Day, Horse Friends!

It’s that magical time of year when horse owners everywhere pretend we’re “just browsing”… and then somehow a cart full of barn gadgets, fly‑warrior tools, and questionable impulse buys shows up on the porch 48 hours later.

At Central Florida Equine, we know the truth:
Prime Day isn’t a sale — it’s a sport.

So tell us:

💬 What’s the BEST horse‑related Prime Day find you’ve ever scored?
The weird thing that worked?
The cheap thing that outperformed the fancy version?
The “I swear this is for the barn” item your spouse still doesn’t understand?

Drop your favorites (and your chaos) in the comments.
Bonus points for photos, links, or stories of how your horse immediately tried to destroy it.

Central Florida Equine would like to share an important update with our community.

In a few weeks, Dr. Rachel Benfield will be transitioning to a veterinary practice in North Carolina, where she’ll be closer to family and able to begin an exciting new chapter.

We are incredibly grateful for the care, compassion, and dedication she has shown to our patients and clients during her time with us. Her contributions have made a lasting impact, and she will be truly missed by our team and many of the horses she’s helped along the way.

As she moves on to this next opportunity, our doctors and staff will continue to provide seamless coverage for all appointments, ongoing cases, and emergencies. If you have any questions about your horse’s care or scheduling, our office is always here to help.

Please join us in wishing Dr. Benfield all the best as she heads on to her next adventure!

If you guessed Cooper for our last “Guess that snoot”, you’d be right! Cooper is Dr Adkins’ 4 legged assistant. And while he may not be the oldest of our furry crew (Moose holds that honor), he is our longest employed Vet truck dog for 8 whole years! He happily enjoys his salary of peanut butter and ear scratches

Here’s another “Guess that snoot!”

This one has quite the large nose that can catch all the scents. You may see him out on the road and always enjoys a good scratch.

Who do you think this impressive nose belongs to?
