🎃🐾 Kara Takes on the Halloween Spooks! 👻🐕‍🦺

It was Kara’s turn to head over to Lowe’s for some confidence-building fun around all the creepy, moving, noisy, and downright WEIRD Halloween decorations!

Giant skeletons, spooky creatures, unexpected movements, and strange sounds might seem like just another Halloween display to us, but for a young service dog in training, they’re incredible learning opportunities!

One of the most important things we can teach a future service dog isn’t just obedience or task work. It’s how to confidently navigate an unpredictable world!

We can’t possibly expose Kara to every single thing she’ll encounter throughout her lifetime. But what we CAN do is give her the tools, experiences, and confidence to handle unfamiliar situations.

We encourage curiosity, allow her to investigate when appropriate, reward engagement, and help her learn that just because something looks or sounds strange doesn’t mean it’s something to fear.

And here’s the thing about confidence building: It’s not about creating a dog who never gets startled. It’s about creating a dog who can recover, process what’s happening, and move forward confidently.

These experiences are especially important during development, but environmental confidence building doesn’t stop when puppyhood ends. It’s something we continue to strengthen as our dogs mature.

🐕‍🦺❤️ We’re not just training Kara for the world she knows today. We’re preparing her for the world she’ll encounter tomorrow!

Because a truly dependable service dog needs more than great obedience and reliable tasks. She needs the emotional resilience, adaptability, and confidence to handle whatever life throws her way!

🐾❤️ Team Freya Update! 🐕‍🦺

One of our favorite things is getting updates from our service dog teams and seeing how they’re doing out in the real world!

Freya has been working alongside her mom full-time, accompanying her to work since December and helping her navigate everyday life!

Her mom recently shared:

💬 “She has been going to work with me since December and doing really well. We go into people’s homes, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.”

We absolutely love hearing this! Freya is navigating a wide variety of environments, meeting new people, experiencing different sights, sounds, and distractions, all while continuing to support her mom.

This is what all those months of training are about! Building confident, reliable service dogs who can transition from training into real-life working partnerships.

Our goal isn’t just to train a service dog. It’s to build a team that can confidently navigate life together. ❤️

We are so proud of Team Freya and love watching their partnership continue to grow!

🎄🐾 Kara Takes on the Christmas Magic! 🎅🐕‍🦺

From spooky Halloween decorations to dancing Santas, giant inflatables, flashing lights, and all kinds of strange holiday displays, Kara’s confidence-building adventures continue!

We headed over to Lowe’s to introduce Kara to another round of unusual sights, sounds, and movements. And while most people are shopping for Christmas decorations, we’re looking at all the incredible training opportunities!

One of the biggest things we focus on when developing future service dogs is environmental confidence.

It’s not enough for Kara to know her obedience or eventually master her service dog tasks. She also needs to be able to navigate an unpredictable world without becoming overwhelmed by everything happening around her.

Christmas decorations are fantastic for this! Things move unexpectedly, make strange noises, light up, and sometimes look absolutely ridiculous to a dog who’s never encountered them before. 😂

But here’s what makes this training so important:

We’re not teaching Kara that Christmas decorations are safe. We’re teaching her HOW to approach unfamiliar situations with confidence!

We encourage curiosity, reward engagement, allow her to investigate at her own pace, and help her develop the ability to process new experiences without fear taking over.

And just because she successfully navigated Halloween decorations doesn’t mean we’re finished! Every new environment and experience gives us another opportunity to strengthen her confidence and resilience.

❤️🐕‍🦺 Our goal isn’t a service dog who has seen everything. It’s a service dog who has the confidence and emotional stability to handle things she’s NEVER seen before!

Today it’s giant snowmen and dancing reindeer. Tomorrow it could be an entirely new challenge.

We’re building the foundation for a confident, adaptable, and dependable adult service dog, one experience at a time! 🎄🐾

🐾 Building Trust, Confidence, and Structure with Orville!

Today we’re working on two very important skills with Orville: Down and Place.

For a dog like Orville, who struggles with fear-based reactivity, something as simple as lying down can actually be incredibly difficult.

Why? Because down is a vulnerable position.

When a dog lies down, they’re putting themselves in a position where they may feel less prepared to react, escape, or defend themselves. For a dog who constantly feels the need to be on alert, that’s a BIG ask!

We’re using clear communication, guidance, and leash pressure to help Orville understand that down is an expectation, not an optional request. But equally important, we’re teaching him that when I ask him to lie down, he’s in an environment where I will advocate for his safety.

We’re not just teaching obedience. We’re building trust in the handler and helping him learn that he doesn’t have to be responsible for managing every perceived threat around him.

And then there’s PLACE!

Place is going to be a HUGE part of Orville’s future success.

We’re developing a designated space where he can settle, decompress, and eventually feel secure. For dogs struggling with fear and anxiety, having a predictable place to go can be incredibly valuable.

Place isn’t just about staying on a bed. It’s about teaching emotional regulation, creating structure, and building an association with calmness and safety.

Of course, that sense of safety is something we build over time through positive experiences, consistency, and trust.

The ultimate goal?

A dog who understands what’s expected of him, trusts his handler to advocate for him, and learns that he doesn’t have to live in a constant state of fight-or-flight.

For Orville, these aren’t just obedience exercises. They’re foundational skills that will help him navigate the world with greater confidence.

We’re not just changing behaviors. We’re helping change how Orville experiences the world. ❤️🐾
