Training animals has truly been one of the best things to happen to me as someone living with a disability.
I’m not saying I can’t work. I’m saying that traditional work environments can make it difficult for me to compete on equal footing. Working for myself through animal training allows me to work without feeling like a burden. I don’t have to worry about strict schedules, and I can build my days around my physical limitations without the constant fear of losing my livelihood.
If I need to take multiple breaks throughout the day to manage my symptoms, I can. If my disability becomes too difficult to manage on a particular day, I can stop at a moment’s notice or take the day off without write ups, penalties, or worrying about how I’ll provide for my family.
Most importantly, I don’t have to overexert myself and risk further injury. Animal training has given me the flexibility, independence, and purpose I need to continue working in a way that supports my health.
