SIMPLE BRIDLELESS EXERCISES: STEERING

I like to set up a bunch of cones and either have a pattern in my head or make something up as I go. The multiple directions so many cones offer, makes it easy to work on precision of tight turns, wide turns and straight lines.

I really like Guy McLean, so I supported his booth at a show and bought his version of a neck rope. I had never used it so I thought I'd try it out.

DICTIONARY OR GLOSSARY?

I'm getting ready to create a dictionary of verbal and physical commands that my horses have to use in order to clearly understand our conversations.

On a side note ... It was suggested that this collection could be called a glossary. (which do you like better?)

Here is a silly version of what to expect. Well, actually NO. I will not only show the command in use as it might be applied in a conversation, I will also explain the uses, the application and yes, even how to install them.

HOW I LOOK AFTER HORSES THAT CAN STAY OUT 24/7

So I actually do not do rough board. Even if the weather permits the extended time outside, I always bring my horses in to inspect them and to make sure that they're feeling okay. I make sure the food intended for the specific horse is consumed by THAT horse. I monitor water intake and most importantly I check that their digestive systems are working. I also give them an opportunity for a little lay down.

I'm not saying this is the only way that people should care for rough board horses, or horses that can stay out full time, but I am saying this is the way I do it so that I can sleep at night knowing that I'm not missing anything.

Be warned that there is a graphic picture of a very bad cut in this video. I shared it because I wanted you to see how severe of an injury a horse can sustain and not even take one bad step. This was discovered because I brought him in, not because I saw something wrong watching him in the field. It's situations like that that confirm for me that I wouldn't do this any other way.

🐎YOU CAN'T ALWAYS STICK WITH THE PLAN 🐎

Being able to read your horse and recognize their struggles can be the greatest value to your relationship.

We started off with a plan, but as Rio became confused he became more expressive in his physical presence. I wanted to regroup and fix his understanding of increasing the size of the circle instead of risking any escalation of aggression or reactiveness.

🐎 TEACHING THE CHANGE OF DIRECTION WHILE MAINTAINING THE GAIT 🐎

So this can be taught fairly easily, however, with Rio we are also dealing with a horse who jumps to conclusions AND gets very offended when he finds out he was wrong. That said, we have to be aware of how he offers a little bit of a "charge" when he is told "No, that's not what I wanted you to do."

We had a successful change at the walk, so we felt we could move up to our plan to ask him to change at, and maintain, the trot in the change.

I warned Donna that some of the offensive behaviors might return when we add speed, and true to form, he did get offended when he THOUGHT he knew, but was wrong.

Because he strongly came into Donna's space so many times in his confusion, I decided that it was better if I stepped in to try to "explain" what we want without adding the complication of the "learning" human at the same time.

Because he was so sure he knew what I wanted, I mixed it up to as for the upward and downward transitions BEFORE going back to the task of the plan. THEN when he was in a better listening frame of mind, I was able to ask for the change and he was able to be a ⭐.

Having a plan is great... Being flexible relationship building.

It might be more work than some farms want to do, but for me it's a mental peace must.
