Since ASHDA's launch, we've been blessed to see interest in our breed grow the world over. New owners and breeders are becoming a part of ASHDA on the regular and our breed has found its way into the hearts and homes of many people. We're always thrilled when the American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft touches another person!

When ASHDA made the decision to open the books in order to bring in some new blood, we knew we had to be careful in what we allowed in the door. One bad quality stallion can affect the entire breed negatively, especially if they are a sought after color. From day one, we imposed strict rules on conformation, genetics, allowable breeds and even color. Only the best are allowed to come into the breed, because one horse can change our future and we want to ensure it is for the better.

However, despite our longstanding rulings, we do still get people who want us to lower our standards. Many people who wish to get into ASHDA wish to do so with horses they already own. And while this can happen, it is rare that someone is already in possession of a breeding pair that meets all of our requirements when they come to ASHDA. Some have come to us with grand plans of buying a draft stallion to breed their herd of appaloosa mares to, or vice versa, and then becoming irate when we inform them that each individual horse must meet both our genetic and conformational requirements before they can produce a registered foal. ASHDA is not a breed you can simply fall into, yet we still face a fair amount of outrage when we will not allow horses in that clearly do not fit our requirements. ASHDA may be a rare breed, but that does not mean we must register every horse that comes knocking. If anything, it means we must be hyper vigilant to ensure that only the horses that will positively influence our breed are permitted entry. This means that when your horse does pass our requirements, you can be assured that they absolutely do belong here.

We understand it's frustrating when horses are turned down. Many of us have horses unsuitable for ASHDA ourselves. It does not make them poor quality animals, it simply means they are not ASHDA material, in the same way you could not breed a Friesian to an Appaloosa and register the foal with ApHC. We encourage anyone who truly wants to get involved with the breed to support our breeders. They have poured endless money, time and effort into shaping their programs to meet our standards so that the best quality foals can be produced. Supporting them supports ASHDA and ethical breeding as a whole.

If you are interested in purchasing your very own ASHDA horse, please contact us for a list of breeders!

🚨 Heads up: if you see my original photos or this text on another page, not shared directly from Trinity Appaloosa Farm, it’s a SCAM. One of these bot-run 'Jannie Belle's Affordable Horses' accounts actually had the nerve to file a fraudulent DMCA on the original version of this post after they stole and reposted ours, watermarked photo included. Now that the dust has settled, here's the post restored, and scammy AI SLOP-erator folks can keep filling their diapers about it!

I'm gonna be so for real with ya'll right now. It's pretty gross to use AI Generated images, period. But, it's especially bad practice to use them in advertising a product, like a living stallion or horse you're trying to sell. It speaks to an unwillingness to invest in your horses, in an inherent dishonesty that requires your horse to be made 'prettier', in a refusal to support the photographers, graphic designers, and handlers that you then expect to pay you stud fees, buy your horses, hire you as a trainer or use you for consignment.

But, let's be real, if you are still using AI, you probably don't care about that. So, let's talk about something you DO care about. Your wallet. That's why you're using AI in the first place; to save money and time.

There are many reasons why people turn away from AI usage in the horse industry, from the political to the practical. People who don't support Generative AI usage because of the global environmental impact will click off of your pages. People who don't want to breed to a stallion or buy a horse with AI regenerated pictures will quietly blacklist you as untrustworthy. They'll tell their own clients and friends that aren't as skilled at recognizing AI. They'll no longer share your posts, recommend your stallions, or ever trust you again.

At the end of the day, you will NEVER lose clients by NOT using AI. And you'll never know just how many people went 'ugh' and let the idea of handing you money to breed their mare, to buy a horse, to hire your services... quietly go from their mind.

A flyer from an up and coming graphic artist costs next to NOTHING, but it builds a relationship with someone who will promote you. A quick photo session with a photographer just starting out is cheap. Hell, a nice camera costs less than losing ONE stud fee. And that's how you need to think of it.

When are you okay losing stud fees, sales, and paydays, and to whom? Most ethical horse folks will pass by a check from a horse abuser, or over conflicting ethics. What about losing one because you thought it'd be cheaper and easier to have ChatGPT make you a logo, a flyer, or a retouched photo of your horse?

What's the better option, longterm? Saving that hundred dollars, or an increasing number of potential customers writing you off as cheap, dishonest, and not worth the trouble?

P.S. And, my sweet babies, I'm gonna say this and you NEED to hear it. We can tell when you let ChatGPT write your posts for you. I'm not reading stuff you can't even be bothered to write. If I wanted to listen to a robot speak with conviction, I'd watch Star Wars again.

Give Your Legacy New Life: The ASHDA Trophy Revival Program 🏆

One of the questions we see come up often in our horse circles is 'What am I going to do with all these old awards?'

Ribbons are easy enough as they are fabric and can be repurposed into quilts, pillows, wreaths, or used for framed artworks to commemorate your accomplishments. Trophies are harder; they take up space to display or to store. You won them, they represent your history, but if your horse days are done and you're trying to downsize, it definitely can feel wrong to dump them off and sell them.

Clubs today have their own problem with awards. They're expensive to buy and cheaply made. The beautiful wood, marble, and brass awards of yesteryear have largely been replaced with low quality plastic that breaks easily, fades, and falls apart. For the up and coming generation of show competitors, going through the work and expense of showing is worth more than a hunk of plastic that will break if you look at it sideways.

Both of these problems have a solution in ASHDA's new Trophy Revival Program. Equestrian trophies from days gone by can be donated to the club to find new life among their competitors. New mantles to grace, new shelves to adorn, and new talented handlers and horses to award. Your provenance will be included, if wished, with the award when it's handed out to its new owner, ensuring the legacy of your past wins gets a little more time in the sun.

If you have any undamaged equestrian trophies you'd like to donate, please contact us and we'll be happy to talk with you! Trophy donors will be listed as a sponsor for the class or category their trophy is awarded for, and old trophies will be given a good polish and new plates to suit!

ASHDA will accept equestrian trophies, generic trophy cups and other unengraved silver or crystal awards, unengraved belt buckles, and other trophy items on a case-by-case basis.

Give those old awards, and your own legacy, some new life in supporting the dedicated folks helping promote our breed! Drop us a line if you'd like more information.
