The amazing people at Whiskers and Fang have two amazing Akitas this handsome man is Quill. Quill loves having agency and the ability to say no. The criteria I use when I’m doing cooperative care with him is target focus equals consent avoidance means to wait. I will often verbalize for the owner when the dog is avoiding so they can recognize the slightest of cues. This adorable baby is Spoon! Does your dog struggle with taking items off the floor? Why not teach them to only take things on cue! This helps with impulse control and creates an added level of safety to using their mouth this is also a great behavior to teach dogs that are fearful or have aggressive behaviors. You can also build on this behavior to teach them to clean up and have an location where they can take items voluntarily like a basket full of their toys.
