Why have my hens stopped laying ?

• Annual Molt: Hens shed their old feathers and grow a new set, which usually takes 8 to 16 weeks. Because feathers are mostly protein, hens divert all their energy and nutrition away from egg production and into feather growth.
• Decreasing Daylight: Even in Florida, the shortening autumn daylight hours signal to a chicken's pineal gland that it is time to slow down or halt egg production, which requires about 14 hours of light daily.
• Heat and Humidity: October in Florida can still feature high temperatures and heavy humidity. Hens experiencing heat stress eat less feed and struggle to absorb the calcium needed for strong eggshells.
• Age: If your hens are over 1.5 to 2 years old, their natural rate of egg production declines each year following their first peak.
• Hidden Nests or Parasites: Free-range hens may be stashing eggs in a hidden spot on your property, or internal/external parasites (like mites and lice) may be draining their health.

How to Help Your Flock

• Boost Protein: Switch your flock temporarily to a higher-protein feed (such as a 20% protein all-flock or grower feed) or offer safe protein treats like mealworms and scrambled eggs to help them regrow feathers.
• Keep Calcium Available: Always provide free-choice oyster shells on the side so hens have the calcium they need stored up for when they resume laying.
• Check for Parasites: Inspect your hens closely at night with a flashlight around their vent area and under their wings for mites or lice.
• Be Patient: If they are molting, expect a pause of a couple of months. Most hens will return to laying naturally once winter passes or when days lengthen.
If you'd like to narrow it down, tell me:
• How old are your hens?
• Are you seeing loose feathers in the coop or yard?

Jumbo Annual Ryegrass is a high-yielding, late-maturing, winter-hardy cool-season forage grass.

Key Features

• Jumbo Rye Genetics: Offers wider leaf blades, a higher leaf-to-stem ratio, and increased sugar content for better palatability.

• Disease Resistance: Highly resistant to crown rust and gray leaf spot.

• Late Maturity: Stays vegetative longer into the season to extend grazing and harvesting windows.

• Cold Tolerance: Performs reliably with medium-to-high cold hardiness across Southern and transition zones.

Uses and Planting

• Best Uses: Livestock grazing, haylage, silage, overseeding warm-season pastures, and cover cropping.

• Seeding Rate: 20 to 30 lbs. per acre.

• Planting Depth: 1/4 inch.

• Planting Time: Fall to early winter when temperatures drop consistently below 65°F.
