Denise
Tech
For the past 20 years at Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic, I have had the privilege of caring for an incredible variety of exotic animals and wildlife—from parrots and reptiles to large barn animals and species I had never encountered before. No two days have ever been the same, and each patient has brought a new challenge and learning opportunity. Working here has given me an education of a lifetime, both professionally and personally.

Maria
Tech
I have over 5 years of experience in emergency medicine, 5 years and counting in wildlife rehabilitation, and 3 years and counting in exotic veterinary care, my passion for veterinary medicine continues to grow. My love for emergency medicine and surgery has followed me into exotic practice, where I get to help patients through challenging cases and surgical procedures. Outside of patient care, I also manage our clinic’s Instagram, combining my love for animals, education, and creativity to share the amazing work we do.

Melissa(Mel)
Tech
I’ve worked as a veterinary technician at AEC for the last eight and a half years. My background has always centered on animals, and I’ve worked with a vast array of species in various zoos, aquariums, and wildlife rehabilitation centers.

I enjoy helping pet parents through all stages of animal care, and have a particular calling for providing compassionate support during end-of-life transitions.

Oliver
Kennel
I have worked as a kennel attendant here at Avian Exotic

Bean on the Scene: Recheck Day

Two stories. Two patients. One very important recheck appointment.

Our first story followed a patient through an enucleation, while our second followed a patient with a broken arm. Now it’s time to check in and see how they’re healing!

Come along with Bean as he gets the inside scoop on their progress. Because around here, Bean on the Scene means Bean is always on the scene.

Can you guess what’s wrong?

This tiny bearded dragon came in with a leg injury and is now sporting a very important little splint.

But there’s more going on than meets the eye.

Swipe to the last photo to see the radiograph.

The joint is dislocated making this a much more serious injury than it may appear from the outside. The radiograph gives us a much better look at what’s actually happening beneath the skin.

Did you guess a dislocation before seeing the X-ray?

No appointments. No work. Just dancing, chicken noises, and weekend birdie shenanigans.
Who said Sundays had to be boring?

This week Bean felt compelled to share this brave bunnies story! Stick around to see how this brave bunny heals from his injury!

P.S. should we make “Bean on the Scene” a regular segment👀?

Meet Bean! Our newest and tiniest employee!
While Bean has been with us for a couple of weeks, he officially made his debut this week and has taken on an important new role: lobby security.
But how does a tiny house sparrow end up as an AEC office pet?
Bean has quite the rescue story! From being raised by humans to finding his way into our care, his journey is a little different from your typical rescue.
Come meet Bean at your fur or feather baby’s next checkup and hear the rest of his story!

Did you know bearded dragons need dental care!?

Unlike mammals, bearded dragons have teeth that are fused directly to their jawbone, making dental disease especially important to catch early. Regular exams can help identify plaque, infection, inflammation, and other oral problems before they become painful.
Morty came to us with a particularly severe case of dental disease and needed to get a dental to get his mouth healthy again. He’s now recovering and being cared for at SPCA Monterey County
