What is a Certified Therapy Dog?

We have had many of our Hawk Haven's "Good Dog" Obedience Training LLC dog students go through our classes in preparation to become a Certified Therapy Dog Team.
For many Therapy Dog Teams it is a hobby they really enjoy. We also have many Therapy Dogs working full time in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, First Responders - police, sheriff, EMS, and fire departments, in doctor, dentist, and therapist offices, etc.

Our students, dog & handler, go through our
- Basic Obedience/Good Manners 8 week course.
- Advanced Fundamentals 7 week course.
- AKC Canine Good Citizen (all 3 levels) 7 week course.
- Then they are ready to do their Certified Therapy Dog Assessment and Evaluation.
Our very own JJ Daggett is a Certified Evaluator for Alliance of Therapy Dog.
JJ volunteers her time, working with dog students to complete their Alliance of Therapy Testing, to become Certified Therapy Dog Teams.

Thank You Toledo Kennel Club for a FUN day of AKC Scent Work Trials.
"2nd Chance" and I just needed to pass One More Time to earn our Advanced Container Title.

We entered Fort Wayne Obedience Training Club Scent Work Trials just for one day, last month and passed both of our Advanced Interior searches, earning our Advanced Interior Title. 🎉🥳🎉
But we messed up on both Advanced Container searches.

So I thought we would try one more time today at Toledo Kennel Club Trials.
I signed up for two searches today.
We passed our first search, but not the second.
But we finally earned our Advanced Container Title!!! 🎉🥳🎉

Chance is now officially Retired from all dog trials.
Adopted at 5 years old, after his elderly owner passed away. Chance was highly skittish of all people.
Thinking he would never be able to do anything, but we would give him a loving home for the rest of his life.

Chance finally learned to trust us. Became my Dog Class Demo Dog. Earnedl 3 levels Canine Good Citizen Titles, 3 levels of Rally Titles, Invited and Performed at 2025 Rally Nationals in Missouri, and earned 6 Scent Work Titles.

Chance just turned 14 years old. Last year he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and now his eyes are so bad, he can't hardly see anything.
During our searches today, I had to go super slow and click my fingers over each container, so he could find the items on the floor.
But we accomplished our goal.

Afterwards when taking off his Scent Work vest that says "Sniff, Sniff, Sniff. I'm Nosey" and on the other side says, "Mama Thinks I'm Special", it hit me! That is the last time he will be wearing it. 😥

Out of all the different events, Chance LOVES Scent Work the Most! All the Memories & FUN we had at the trials and all the new friends we made along the way.

I am Sharing a Post by my Rally Obedience Student
Beth Arnold

Awesome day showing Miss Charlotte. We were at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Just moved up to Intermediate Rally and I have made a couple mistakes but Charlotte is a rock star! Today in Rally Intermediate we scored a 90 and in Rally Novice B our first perfect score 100!! It was loud and crazy but Charlotte did a great job staying focused on me. Then since SueAnn Dave Mahnke was signed up for Fast Cat (basically a 100 yard dash) we tagged along and tried a "fun run" OMG she loves it!! Her first time was 9.894!! Thats pretty fast! So I signed her up for a point run, her second run was 8.318!! Thats over 24 mph! Adding a few pics and some video if anyone wants to watch. Oh and we did stop for pup cups, the girls deserved them 😊

First day of Basic Obedience/Good Manners Class, I had a wonderful Cream Golden Retriever puppy from Hornish Goldens, named Luna.
Awesome breeder Lisa Hornish of Oakwood, Oh.
Then discovered it is a very good probability Luna will go all the way through our training courses to become a Service Dog for their 12yr. son. He will start attending dog training classes with Luna next week.
