One more share for Steph as well- she’s still really having a hard time and we love her and owe her so so much for everything she has done for us!

🚨 I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP. 🚨

I’ve spent most of my life helping animals, through single parenthood, financial struggles, chaos, loss, and plenty of times when I probably should have stepped back. Somehow, I’ve always found a way to keep going.

But right now, Steph’s Pet Rescue is in danger of having to close its doors.

I’m dealing with major life changes while also carrying over $1,000 in veterinary debt, plus the constant cost of food, litter, hay, medications and supplies.

I don’t want my personal circumstances to be the reason I stop helping animals. But I can’t keep carrying all of this alone.

🙏 If you can donate even $5 or $10, purchase something from the wish list, or simply SHARE this post, it truly matters.

I’ve spent a lifetime showing up for animals. Right now, I’m asking my community to show up for me so I can keep showing up for them. ❤️🐾

Time for an education post

There is a rumor going around that guinea pigs can have unlimited calcium in their diets and let me just say this is NOT TRUE. It's so much complicated than that so please, take internet "experts" information with a grain of salt.

Calcium in and of itself is not the total culprit. It binds with oxalates phosphorus, or nitrates, to form crystals, sludge and potentially stones. It's significantly easier to tell people to be mindful of calcium than it is to tell them to bust out the calculator and factor in every % of calcium, phosphates, oxalates, nitrates found in their pellets, hay and fresh food.

A passage in the BSAVA Handbook was misinterpreted. Yes they do need some calcium in their diet to maintain helathy teeth and bones. And yes, pairing the higher calcium veggies with a more watery veggie such as cucumbers is beneficial to help them flush the excess calcium out of their system. But on page 21 of the BSAVA handbook (yes we have our own copy) under the Calcium and Vitamin D section, it specifically says DO NOT give too many high calcium foods.

If your piggie is doing great on their current healthy diet, great job and keep up the good work! If you want to make some changes to your piggies diet, ALWAYS consult your cavy savvy veterinarian first.

Even those of us with a ton of hands on experience are not substitutes for actual veterinary advice.
We can misinterpret the language, we may have missed a more recent study, we don't have the same access to information that an exotics vet does. So please, please, please, verify with a vet before making changes to your pets routine.

I am so excited I FINALLY finished Arcane and Sawyer's cage upgrade. I'd love to say that Im finished with building new cages but I had another idea for maybe 2 more. At this point, I may just be crazy. I'm a bit sad though cause whatever brand of zip ties I used this time gave me a bunch of blisters on my hands. I'm gonna add the ties I used last time to our Am of Zon list so I can add the final touches if anyone can be so kind as to send some non blistery ties.

My trip to MB took a very funny turn. I filled my cart with everything I needed for the crew and went to look for my emotional support veggie sushi for dinner. As im walking, someone stopped and me and said Hey! The piggies are going to be so happy! 😆 It finally happened. Not only does the staff know me as the guinea pig lady, but customers recognize me now too!

So then I go over to Starbucks because I needed a super caffiene boost to clean cages tonight and then the barista says oh! How are all the guinea pigs?? 😆😆🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
I laughed all the way home

Going to MB on the weekend is my least favorite thing but alas, the crew (and the human) need stuff to eat. If anyone wants to contribute to leafy stuff for the piggies, then I can talk myself into leaving the house.
