Don't let that sweet face fool you, he is in pain and is in a whole mood about it. I gave some OMs and he should be feeling much better very soon. His crankiness has earned him the name, Angry Johnny. (I'm still using a Gaslight Anthem/Brian Fallon theme for most piggies). I've named his friend Jersey after Brian Fallon's new song, Not Bad for New Jersey (also my home state). Both are very nervous and I dont think they were handled much. Johnny also gave me a very firm nip when I was checking him over but I cant blame him. I feel the same when I'm in pain.

Double SURPRISE!

I stumbled upon a profile for a satin piggie and their friend up near Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals. They were supposed to be girls but not so much so now I have to get creative once I get home. No biggie though. I knew the moment I saw the size difference between the two that the satin had osteodystophy around his jaw. The friend is... well.. rotund. The satin isn't underweight but its pretty obvious that he eats slower and his friends takes advantage of that. Since I was around the corner from Dr. Ford's I popped in there to pick up somw donations and he had a few minutes in between appts so he felt around the jaw and confirmed he is very painful around the jaw. He'll get a full exam next week but at least for now I know how much pain meds to start him on.
I also bumped into one of our friends while I was there so I got to meet his piggie and as always, learned something new from Dr. Ford. Im really excited to share some interesting info with you all over the next few days!
I gotta drive home but I'll be on later tonight!

Much like Ilya, I am about to start angrily building a blanket fort. It is temper tantrum time.

Why I am frustrated: It is just so hard to be seen on the book of faces. I will spend two hours carefully curating something based off the creator recommendations, tailoring the language to make the robot happy, look into trends and the best ways to communicate with people, and 10 people will see it. Damn it! It’s so unfortunate. It’s not even an ego thing. I just hate knowing that things are tight right now especially when that is the last thing people at the rescue deserve to be worrying about. They deserve to be morning. And I want to be as helpful as possible so they don’t need to worry as much. But that’s just not how things are going. And this will likely only be seen by the same 20 people who always cheer us on and try to support us. You guys are amazing. But we wish we didn’t have to constantly bug you about needing help! I am trying to have some hope that our new channel will make things better. It should circumvent some of the current issues. But we need to fill it for that to work.

Why Ilya is frustrated: We are doing intros right now and the rats he is meeting are small. Ilya hates small and vulnerable rats. They fill him with anger. We learned this with Cheeks. He hated her. But he got along swimmingly with Elena, who is human and rat aggressive. Which defies supposed rat hierarchy rules but 🤷 he hate an underdog I guess. I was using my phone as a barrier during intros (should have used something bigger lol) and accidentally took this video. So enjoy life from a rats perspective. I’ve included metal music because I feel like it captures Ilya’s angst.

People often think that boggling is a sign of happiness- and that’s usually the case- but really it mostly indicates a strong emotion. Ilya is a big feeler and will boggle anytime anything good, bad, or annoying happens.

When we brought Phoenix to Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals (again) yesterday, we revisited x rays because his coughing was actually getting worse even on a pretty strong abx. It looks like his Bronchitis is extra stubborn we are switching to Doxy to see if that does the trick, we strongly suspect that since he was so sick as a baby, his immune is just really weak. The Doxy was called in yesterday so I anticipate hearing from Petscripts today. Anything towards that would be great! He is also going back on July 1st so we can rerun his bloodwork to look at his lover values since they were very concerning when he was itty bitty.

It was a very busy day today! I ran Satyr and Phoenix to Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals (updates on them later) and Betsy has the appt right after ours so I got smooch on PB, my favorite wonky Wheektopia Guinea Pig Care and Rescue Center resident, again. I sat in on that appt because there is always something to learn from other rescues' critters too. I got our boys home and then had to run back out to get veggies and human groceries. It was just too hot today for them to spend even a short amount of time in the car while I was shopping. I got some food in me and now I need to clean the herd and a few of the smaller groups. Wish me luck!

Education is a huge part of our mission, and I will use Ilya’s story to ensure as many guinea pigs, rats, degus, female mice, gerbils, etc. get to experience sunshine as possible. He is so much happier.

It is well documented that social isolation results in negative mental and physical health outcomes in rodents. This includes anxiety, depression, higher rates of illness and earlier age of death. It can also induce schizophrenia like behaviors.

I got to spend some time with Alanna's kitties, Marshmallow and Mama Cat (she was near us but she doesnt do snuggles with humans) yesterday. It was definitely bittersweet. They are hanging out at Ericka's house and I spent the day there. I miss my friend. We all miss our friend. But we are glad we could at least do right by her animals.

Apparently it is a Rainforest Primary day! The day that every Rainforest member can acquire bedding, hides, hay and cleaning tools (and everything else I guess) for less. This guinea pig would love some stuffs that make his life here at the sanctuary possible.

We have some plans to improve graphics in the works but also it is midnight and we just realized the date and I wanted to have it by morning so you guys are stuck with my aesthetics for today lol.
