Some dogs can feel everything deeply. And sometimes, that sensitivity comes out as barking, lunging, fear, or reactions that others don’t understand.

These behaviors are so deeply misunderstood. But they aren’t a reflection of a “bad” dog. But of a dog who feels the world deeply and is doing their best to navigate it.

They are proof that sensitivity and strength can live in the same soul.

And personally, we think that’s what makes them so incredibly special and why they deserve more patience.

Because beneath every big reaction is a dog who is simply trying to feel safe in a world that can sometimes feel like too much.

What do you think Balto finds most reinforcing in this session? 👀

Food is one of the most common reinforcers we use in dog training, but it isn't the only one AND it isn't always the most valuable.

Balto has a history of aggression toward other dogs, and in this session we're using a variety of reinforcers to help him make good choices. Food is part of the picture, but so are movement, space, praise, tactile interaction, predictability, and even having a loose leash.

Watch closely and you may notice Balto's tail wag when Casey gives him more freedom and interaction. For him, having some control over his movement and social environment can be incredibly reinforcing!

This is why effective behavior modification isn't about finding one "magic" reinforcer. We have to learn what matters to the individual dog and use those reinforcers thoughtfully.

Some dog training advice needs to be burned away 🙃

We know that fear and pain can come with serious fallout, including increased anxiety, avoidance, fear-related aggression, and learned helplessness.

So maybe we can stop teaching people to "correct the growl" or "grab them by the scruff."

Let's start teaching people how dogs actually learn! Because better information means better choices, which leads to better outcomes for dogs!

SUMMER REMINDER: Dogs can overheat quickly, especially during exercise and outdoor play! When temperatures and humidity rise, dogs have a harder time cooling themselves through panting. High humidity makes it harder for dogs to cool themselves efficiently, increasing the risk of exhaustion and heatstroke.

Remember: This is an informal guideline. Always consider the individual dog, activity level, shade, airflow, and outdoor conditions.

Simple game for training a reliable recall!

1️⃣ Place a treat on the ground
2️⃣ While dog is eating the treat, take a few steps back
3️⃣ Say their recall cue like "Honey, come!"
4️⃣ Reward them generously for coming to you
5️⃣ Repeat in different environments
6️⃣ Slowly incorporate distractions

The more you practice, the stronger the recall!

We hear this one a lot. And we understand why. Hope is a powerful thing when you're living with a dog whose behavior feels overwhelming.

But here's what years of working with dogs who "didn't grow out of it" has taught us: behavior that is rooted in fear, anxiety, or frustration rarely resolves on its own. Without the right intervention it typically does one of two things. It stays exactly the same. Or it gets worse.

The longer a behavior goes unaddressed the more practiced your dog becomes at it. And the more practiced they become the harder it is to change.

We're not saying this to scare you. We're saying it because we've seen what happens when families wait years hoping things will shift on their own and we've also seen what happens when they get the right support early.

The difference is significant.
