Here’s an update on the post that so many of you found intriguing (you can see it pinned to the top of our page)! The early fall rains have started and now it’s time to see how our experiment worked. It will probably take several seasons, but with the introduction of manure and urine from the cattle, along with the nutrients that will be made available to the soil by the cover crops, we are anticipating this area to heal, and the perennial grasses and broadleaf forbs to eventually dominate instead of the shallow-rooted annual cheatgrass.

Being a plumber always comes in handy on a farm! All of our irrigation is gravity fed from a pond we built on the hill above our house. This passive system typically gives us about 8-12 pounds of pressure for watering, depending on the water level in the pond. Most sprinklers need much higher pressure than that to run properly. We’ve mainly relied on drip tape and hand watering, which works great for us, but sometimes we need water in a larger area, or an area that doesn’t have drip tape run to it. That’s where needing a low-pressure sprinkler comes in. We were thrilled to find these “wobbler” sprinkler heads, designed especially for low pressure. A few pieces of pipe, some fittings, and glue and…viola! A sprinkler that works on a low-pressure, passive watering system.

We’ve got every stage of gardening happening in the greenhouse right now- harvesting, growing, and planting. The summer crops, like tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants are loaded with fruit. We planted spinach, lettuce, and beets several weeks ago and they are growing nicely. Today we pulled out the green beans, as they are done producing, and planted more lettuce, carrots, and spinach. We’ve never planted this late in the year, but the weather is so nice and warm, and we’ve got this nice, warm greenhouse for season extension so we are giving it a try.
