Our kids each have their roles with milk chores- Samuel separates Taffy from the calf in the evening, and our daughters do the milking in the morning. Keeping a routine is important with dairy cows, so we try to keep things the same.
We milk her in this beautiful historic barn that we restored with several other families on a piece of property just down the road from our farm.

I can’t say enough how well it has worked for us to share this cow with other families! We had our own dairy cow for years, and the management of that was quite a load, both in the commitment to the care and milking of the cow, and also in the processing and usage of all the milk she produced. Sharing the cow with several other families reduces that load substantially.

Having access to raw milk is as valuable as access to a gold mine in my opinion 🤠. This is our evening routine for milk chores. We share our dairy cow with a few other families, which makes it very manageable. We also leave the calf with the mama during the day, and then separate them at night, so that we both get the benefits of good milk🐄🥛.

In late summer, we move our cattle into the woods to graze all of the green undergrowth. The brush is rich in minerals and nutrients that are different from what they are getting in the grass, so this variation in their diet is not only very good for them, but they also greatly enjoy it..

We had such an inspiring weekend at the Azure Standard Harvest Festival! The talent and vision of the Stelzer family is truly remarkable. Their creativity and sincerity is apparent in everything they do. And they are so innovative — if the equipment they need doesn’t exist, they build it themselves😁.

We enjoyed touring their farm and factories, visiting with friends, and learning alongside other like-minded families. We came home encouraged and full of ideas..

Yesterday afternoon Samuel moved some of the chicks that hatched first into the brooder. Chicks can survive on the nutrients they get from the yolk for up to 72 hrs after hatching, so there wasn’t in hurry for them to get food and water, but it was getting a little crowded in the incubator 🐣🐥.

The chicks are hatching in Samuel’s incubator 🐣👏. This batch is all Araucanas and Barred Rocks. .

Here are several things that we do with those zucchinis that inevitably get overlooked in the garden. Comment “all“ if you would like all of these recipes, or specify which recipe you’d like in the comments and I’ll share them with you!

This has been an all hands-on-deck family project! The idea for this was spawned by our daughters’ love for cooking and gardening, combined with our passion for hospitality, community, and connection, and our ongoing efforts to create opportunities for family economy.

👩‍🌾Next summer we will be offering farm-to-table dinners on this patio, situated in our garden next to our greenhouse! Our evening farm experience will include farm tours, a delicious banquet-style dinner cooked entirely from what we raise on our farm, the opportunity to collect and harvest farm products to take home, and the experience of meeting and making new friends!

👩‍🌾We can’t wait to share this with all of you next year! Stay tuned for updates and announcements!
