Did you know we perform prophylactic gastropexy procedures here at VivaVet Medical Center?
A gastropexy is a preventative surgery commonly recommended for deep-chested dog breeds such as Great Danes, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, Doodles, German Shepherds and Saint Bernards. These breeds are at a higher risk for Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), also known as “bloat.”
Bloat occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself. When this happens, it becomes a life-threatening emergency that can cut off blood flow to the stomach and other vital organs within minutes.
A gastropexy helps prevent the stomach from twisting by surgically attaching it to the body wall. While it does not prevent the stomach from filling with gas, it dramatically reduces the risk of a deadly torsion.
This procedure is often performed at the time of a spay or neuter, especially in high-risk breeds. Preventative care can truly save lives.
