Take Action was honored to celebrate the ribbon cutting today as VEG officially opened its doors in Bellevue!

Until now, emergency veterinary care has been limited in our area, meaning pet emergencies would require a longer drive when every minute matters.

This is such an exciting and important addition to our community. VEG provides 24/7 emergency care with no appointment needed. AND, you can stay with your pet the entire time, even through surgery.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that spreads through wildlife urine and can cause serious kidney or liver damage if it goes untreated. Puddles, ditches, ponds, and slow-moving water near the Fox River are all fair game. Dogs pick it up by drinking from or walking through contaminated water, then it gets into their system through a cut or through their mouth during a normal bath and grooming routine.

The leptospirosis vaccine doesn't guarantee your dog won't get sick, but it makes a serious case far less likely. If your dog spends time outside, wades through puddles, or drinks from anything that isn't their bowl, now's a good time to check their vaccine status.

Canada has sent us its smoke, Wisconsin brought the heat, and apparently one atmospheric insult wasn’t enough.

During a heat wave, you should close the windows and run the air conditioning. During a wildfire-smoke event, that same closed-up house can trap fine particles that sneak indoors. A Corsi-Rosenthal box helps remove those particles without requiring a luxury-appliance budget.

Why does this matter?

Wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, cause coughing and breathing problems, and worsen existing heart or lung disease. Pets are affected too. Senior pets, puppies and kittens, flat-faced breeds, and animals with heart or respiratory conditions deserve extra caution.

Heat adds another problem. Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting. When the air is hot and filled with smoke particles, their lungs are being asked to work overtime while also trying to regulate body temperature. Lovely little system we’ve created here.

For now:
• Keep outdoor trips short and purposeful
• Skip walks and strenuous exercise
• Keep windows closed when outdoor air quality is poor
• Provide air conditioning and plenty of fresh water
• Run a Corsi-Rosenthal box in the room where your family and pets spend the most time
• Check AirNow.gov before heading outside

A Corsi-Rosenthal box does not cool the room and does not replace air conditioning. If your home becomes dangerously hot, go somewhere with both air conditioning and cleaner indoor air.

A quick swim can become an emergency.

Blue-green algae can grow in ponds and lakes during the summer, and it can be deadly for dogs. If the water looks like pea soup, spilled paint, has a green scum, or simply doesn’t look right, keep your pet out.

Remember:
• Don’t let your dog drink from questionable water.
• Rinse them with clean water if they accidentally go in.
• If your pet develops vomiting, weakness, tremors, excessive drooling, or seizures after being around a lake or pond, seek veterinary care immediately.

When in doubt, choose a different swimming spot. It’s not worth the risk.

Keep pets safely indoors, make sure they have updated ID tags or a microchip, and provide a quiet place where they can feel secure during the festivities.

Just a reminder that Animal Hospital of De Pere will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, so our team can spend the holiday with their families.
