De Leon Shelter would like to wish everyone a PAWsitively happy Friday!
We’ve just received word that our best good boy Domino has been adopted 💙
If you remember Domino, his odds didn’t look promising when he came in. He had essentially been raised feral and he was terrified to be confined, wouldn’t eat, refused to be touched or handled in any way.
First, he needed time to decompress. Then the work began.
For 3 weeks I debated whether he’d make it out. Were we doing more harm than good by encouraging interaction when he was so clearly shut down? Would euthanasia be kinder to him?
As a last effort, I resorted to hand feeding him daily, to prove to him that he could trust me. I needed to get him some outside time, a play group, some semblance of a happy life for a shelter dog.
But then it happened
The breakthrough!
After trying all different kinds of treats, Domino really perked up for milk bones dipped in peanut butter. By the end of the day I could gently pet his head without a growl.
By the end of that week he was going outside because he WANTED to, and eagerly coming back to his kennel anticipating pets a meal ❤️
Within two weeks he had a play group! Then we worked toward a collar and leash. There were setbacks, but slowly Domino let go of the idea that humans, and their tools, meant pain or fear.
His big ticket was being selected for rescue transport to Humane Society of North Texas, where their incredible team expanded on everything he had learned, they really taught him to shine so brightly!
That sparkle caught someone’s attention 🐾
For those that don’t realize how wonderful this is, Domino was dealt characteristics that research says points to even lower adoption rates.
Domino came in at a disadvantage just because of his size, age, and coat color. To be so scared and shut down as well? Many dogs do not improve in shelter environments. Many never get the opportunity to show their true personalities.
We are all dealt our hand of cards and we have to do our best. Domino turned his hand around and won the game 🥹
Our Domino has found his family and I’m crying happy tears! What a way to kick off the weekend.
