Raincoats on, leashes ready. Potty breaks don’t take a rain check! ☔🐾

Three potty walks a day, every day, rain or shine! Through our Open Paw training program, potty walks are scheduled at 7AM, noon, and 4PM, helping our dogs build a consistent routine that prepares them for life in a home after adoption.

These walks are about more than bathroom breaks. Practicing a predictable schedule helps establish good potty habits, which can mean fewer indoor accidents and a smoother transition for pets and their new families. Helping adoptions succeed also helps reduce returns. 💙

Even on the wettest days of the rainy season, our staff and dedicated volunteers show up to make sure every dog gets their turn. Here’s our team geared up and ready to go!

A few weeks ago, Woody’s happiness was impossible to miss. Now, we’re watching him struggle—and we need your help. 💙

For over two months, Woody has been waiting for a loving family. Our staff has noticed a change in him from the exuberant, happy dog he was just a few weeks ago. The shelter can be a stressful environment for any animal, and it’s becoming harder for Woody to cope. Seeing that change in a dog we know and love has been heartbreaking.

We know the joy he finds in a game of fetch, the excitement of a car ride, and how happily he settles beside someone for cuddles. We want him to have those moments every day—with someone who makes him feel safe, loved, and at home.

This handsome 5-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier loves long walks, tug-of-war, and tasty biscuits. He enjoys having fun with kids, has experience living with small dogs, and makes a wonderful impression out in public—even joining you for a dog-friendly dinner.

Woody has so much love to give. He needs someone to meet him, get to know him, and give him the chance to be their companion.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Greater Good Charities has stepped up to help us with a major project: creating a space where survivors can know their pets are safe and feel able to take the next step toward safety themselves. 💜

Through our partnership with the Domestic Abuse Council , Halifax Humane Society provides temporary care for pets whose families are navigating domestic violence. Having a safe place for a beloved animal can help remove a barrier to seeking safety.

For the past week, Greater Good Charities and dedicated volunteers have been on campus renovating our Culler Pet Resource Center, transforming a former boarding kennel facility into a dedicated crisis pet housing space. Seeing such a difference in the space after just one week has been amazing for our team—and knowing what these improvements will mean for families makes it even more meaningful.

From kennel improvements to pet visitation rooms and an upgraded play yard, this work will provide a safe, welcoming place for pets while their families navigate domestic violence, medical emergencies, and other crises.

Thank you to Greater Good Charities, the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County, and every volunteer helping bring this space to life. Your time, care, and hard work will make a lasting difference for people and the pets they love.

🐾 Why does Open Paw training happen in levels?

New volunteers sometimes ask why they can’t just jump in and start working with any dog or cat on day one. The answer is that Open Paw training is broken into four progressive levels, and that structure exists for real reasons.

First, animal training is complex. Breaking it into stages means a brand-new volunteer can safely begin working with animals on their very first day, instead of waiting weeks for a full certification.

Second, and most importantly, what you learn in Level 1 is the foundation for everything after it. Forming positive associations and reward training aren’t “beginner” skills you graduate past. They’re the underlying principles behind every level of training we do, no matter how advanced. Skipping ahead without them means later techniques won’t make sense, because they all build on the same base.

Third, it’s about safety, for the animal and for you. Shelter animals can experience heightened stress, which means they may react faster and less predictably. Each level asks a little more of both the volunteer and the animal. Mastering one level teaches you the body language and handling skills you need before taking on the next.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll walk through each level for both dogs and cats, explaining what it teaches and why it’s sequenced the way it is. 🐶🐱

Akira has found her spot on the couch and a new best friend to share it with! 💙🐾

This sweet 2-year-old arrived at Halifax Humane Society as a stray in July. After an adoption and a return, she had another chance to find a loving family. Seeing her settle into her new home makes our hearts so happy.

Her family reports that within just two days, Akira was already running around and playing with her new companion, Flora! She’s been enjoying her toys, relaxing on the couch, and snoozing so comfortably that her snores have become part of the household soundtrack. 💤

She’s still getting the hang of her potty routine, but her family is helping her along with patience and love. We’re so grateful they opened their home and hearts to Akira and shared this wonderful update with us.

🎓🐾 Before their next chapter begins, these seniors made time to be part of someone else’s.

Some members of Warner Christian Academy’s senior class joined us for a day of volunteering at Halifax Humane Society! Between classes, graduation plans, and everything senior year brings, they chose to spend time helping our team care for animals waiting for loving families.

There’s something special about seeing young people show up with a willingness to help. The everyday work of caring for animals takes many hands, and every person who joins us makes that work a little lighter. 💙

Thank you, Warner Christian Academy seniors, for sharing your time and kindness with us. We’re grateful you made giving back part of your senior year!

💙🐾 Yesterday, so many of our pets took the ride we’ve been hoping for: the ride home.

Yesterday’s Subaru Loves Pets adoption event was filled with moments that mean everything to us: new connections, happy send-offs, and pets leaving with loving families.

To everyone who opened your home and heart to a new furry family member: thank you. We get to know and love these animals while they’re with us, so seeing them head home with someone who is ready to love them means so much. And to everyone who stopped by, shared our posts, or cheered them on, you helped make those moments possible.

Subaru of Daytona , we are so grateful for you. Thank you for opening your doors to us, rain or shine, and for being a community partner we can count on to show up for pets in need.

We’re also grateful to Subaru of America , through its subarulovespets initiative, and the ASPCA for supporting the veterinary care and adoption preparation that help our animals get ready to join loving families. Your support helps make days like yesterday possible. 🐾

If you couldn’t join us yesterday, there are still plenty of introductions waiting to happen. Animals arrive at our main campus on LPGA every day, each with their own personality, story, and need for a loving family. Come spend some time with them.
