Happy Gotcha Day to all of the pets who found loving homes this week! 🐾💙

Every pet adopted from Halifax Humane Society has been examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and started on monthly flea and heartworm preventatives. They leave our care ready to begin their next chapter with the families who choose them.

We are so grateful to everyone who opened their hearts and homes to a shelter pet this week. Because of you, these pets now have a loving family to call their own.

There are still so many pets waiting for their chance to be loved. If you’re ready to meet your new best friend, visit us in person or view all of our adoptable pets online.

Senior dogs are so often overlooked, but yesterday, 8-year-old Alice got the second chance she deserved. 💙

This sweet Dolly’s Dream dog went home with a loving family who opened their hearts and home to her golden years, and we could not be more grateful.

A huge thank you to Dolly’s Dream, a program of the Levitetz Family Foundation that supports bully breed dogs and helps them find loving homes. Thanks to their generosity, Alice’s adoption fee was waived, and she went home with everything she needed to get started, including a crate, collar, leash, food, toys, treats, and preventatives.

Happy tails, Alice! We are so excited for your next chapter! 🐾

From heartbreak to healing, Dunkin’s story is the kind of second chance your support makes possible. 💙

Now named Murphy, this sweet girl is over 1 year old and thriving happily in her loving home. She first arrived at Halifax Humane Society as a 4-month-old stray after being found alone in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot with a devastating injury to her right hind leg: a complete fracture of the lower femur.

Our expert veterinary team evaluated the severity of her injury and determined that a lifesaving leg amputation would give her the best chance at a happy, pain-free future.

After time spent healing in foster care, Dunkin returned to the adoption floor, but shelter life soon became too overwhelming for her. When she began to decline, she was placed with another foster family who gave her the comfort, patience, and love she needed to continue healing. Just one week later, they officially adopted her.

Today, Murphy is thriving as a happy tripod, surrounded by the love and comfort she always deserved.

Stories like Murphy’s are possible because of our Animal Hero Club, a compassionate group of monthly donors who help provide lifesaving care, comfort, and second chances to animals in need. Thank you for helping turn moments of heartbreak into stories of hope.

If you are interested in being part of what makes second chances like Murphy’s possible, you can join our Animal Hero Club here: https://www.halifaxhumanesociety.org/animal-hero/ 🐾

Did you know that many dog breeds were specifically developed to perform certain jobs? Herding breeds like Triton were bred to chase, gather, and move livestock. That instinct is still very much alive today!

Instead of allowing that energy to be directed toward inappropriate outlets, we can provide breed-specific enrichment like a herding ball. This gives Triton a safe and appropriate way to satisfy his genetic need to chase and move objects while reducing stress and improving his overall well-being.

One of the goals of our Open Paw program is to ensure every dog receives at least 20 minutes out of their kennel run each day. This time may be spent training, socializing, playing, exercising, or simply enjoying some quiet “down time” in someone’s office. By meeting both their physical and behavioral needs, dogs are often calmer, more focused, and better able to learn. That means Triton can spend his daily 15-minute training sessions learning new skills that increase his confidence and adoptability.

Here, Triton is doing exactly what he was bred to do—and having a blast doing it!

A special thank you to the generous supporter who purchased this herding ball from our Amazon Wish List. Your donation is making a direct impact on the lives of shelter dogs by providing enrichment that reduces stress, improves welfare, and helps dogs like Triton shine while they wait for their forever homes.

Interested in donating? You can order straight from our Open Paw Amazon Wishlist using this link:

Bernadette enjoys tasty Churu treats, cozy hiding spots, and quiet companionship. She may have limited “kitty minutes” at first, but once she decides you’re a friend, she happily leans into gentle pets and affection.

This observant girl would thrive in a patient, loving home that allows her to blossom at her own pace. With time, kindness, and a little understanding, Bernadette is sure to make a wonderful companion for someone special.

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and we can’t think of a better time to meet the incredible cats waiting for loving homes! 🐾

This week’s adoptable cats each have their own special personalities. Some are playful, curious, and ready to chase toys across the room. Others are calm, affectionate, and happiest curled up in a cozy spot near their favorite person. Whether you’re looking for a social butterfly, a quiet companion, or a little bit of both, there may be a shelter cat waiting to fit perfectly into your life.

Adopting a shelter cat means giving a deserving pet a second chance while making room for another animal in need. This month, we’re celebrating all the cats who bring comfort, laughter, independence, and love into the homes lucky enough to welcome them.

Come meet our adoptable cats this week in-person!
