Fawn has been attending Barn Hunt classes to unlock her true terrier potential🥰 We have to practice the concept of searching & alerting at home so Fawn can continue to progress.

Scent Work is HEAVY on the brain. Dogs need to be independent, sure of themselves, and able to deduce detail. Make sure to practice the basics A LOT!

WED (9/9) - 9am at Russ Nature Preserve: Remix will be exploring the playgrounds! Great location for physical activity; plus activities to help work through big feelings

FRI (9/11) - 6pm at Eastwood Metropark: Eevee will be sniffing and enjoying a more mellow walk. Minimal distractions, lots of space; perfect for long line walks!

We encourage anyone to join us for fun or training. Remix & Eevee are perfect dogs to socialize with!
Socializing = exposing to social situations. Reduce excitement and/or fear by desensitising your pet to various animals & situations.
We do NOT interact with other dogs on leash for safety/training/socializing purposes.

Cashew had his first trip to a pet store today; and both him & his sister got new collars!

We've been slowly working on increasing distractions/difficulty outside of the home. Cashew continues to make beautiful progress because we work at *his* pace🥰

His biggest concern is strangers, so we will be prioritizing people watching. Our goal is to be able to attend group classes so we can eventually explore sports with him!

(And maybe work on posing for pictures😜)

Dogs are going to ask us for things because they rely on us to provide literally all of their needs. They will get excited, want attention, desire to share delicious snacks with us, etc. It's why we brought them into our home! To enjoy the little things, together, every day.

I teach my dogs that if they would like something, they have to ask politely. A sit, or down, will suffice. When they bark, smack me, jump, get in my personal space, etc. They simply get nothing. This typically discourages repeating unwanted behavior because it never benefits them. We end up with dogs that sit near us when we eat pizza because we reinforce that behavior often! (They get my pizza crust)

Instead of pushy dogs, we have polite dogs! Dogs are gonna beg for food, or attention🤷‍♀️ But we can teach them manners & boundaries. Shaping that "beg" into a more desirable behavior!

FLIGHT: When the animal chooses to run from conflict, or danger, to keep themselves feeling safe.

Even on a leash, with nowhere to go, a dog will attempt to flee in various ways.
1. Pacing consistently, searching for an exit
2. Moving away from food or comfort the owner may present to them
3. Does not respond to any vocal cues
4. Watches environment intensely to assess when or how they should flee

And likely other little behaviors🙃
When a dog enters a Fear Response state, they struggle to learn or retain information. Their nervous system is operating on very basic instincts. Half of their brain is essentially turned off.

Remix had to visit an emergency vet over the weekend (he is okay now💕) and it got us thinking about Waiting Room Etiquette.

Whether it's your general vet, or an emergency/urgent care clinic: Do Not Greet Other Animals!!!

Very often we bring our pets to the vet for vague symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, etc. These can be minor issues, but sometimes it can be something more serious and *contagious*. Whether it's your own dog, or a stranger's pet, sometimes we don't know why our animal is feeling ill. And we certainly don't want to spread that illness around the waiting room!

Another reason to leave other animals alone is because they are likely in pain, like Remix was. We brought him in because he was refusing to move and cried when he tried. Animals will often lash out when they are in intense pain because of fear & discomfort. They try to protect themselves to prevent further pain. If another dog tried to greet Remix and he bit them, I would not blame Remix for that action. This is also why we muzzle train ALL of our dogs. So vet staff are safe while taking care of our beloved pets.

Our local CareCenter did a great job trying to prevent dogs from saying hello to one another in the crowded waiting room. Their gentle "we don't make friends in the ER!" made us smile and feel safe.
It was disheartening to witness owners not realize the danger they accepted when happily letting their sick dog lick the face of another sick dog...

We do not wish to shame people. It was in that moment we realized a lot of people simply don't know. We hope this post informs many pet owners so your dogs continue to live long, healthy lives💖
