I teach my dogs a Formal Beg.
👇Let me explain ...
Dogs are going to ask us for things because they rely on us to provide literally all of their needs. They will get excited, want attention, desire to share delicious snacks with us, etc. It's why we brought them into our home! To enjoy the little things, together, every day.
I teach my dogs that if they would like something, they have to ask politely. A sit, or down, will suffice. When they bark, smack me, jump, get in my personal space, etc. They simply get nothing. This typically discourages repeating unwanted behavior because it never benefits them. We end up with dogs that sit near us when we eat pizza because we reinforce that behavior often! (They get my pizza crust)
Instead of pushy dogs, we have polite dogs! Dogs are gonna beg for food, or attention🤷♀️ But we can teach them manners & boundaries. Shaping that "beg" into a more desirable behavior!
