👀Remember these tiny tenants❓

🖋️ Many of you were correct in identifying these as small strongyles (cyathostomins) in this manure🪱

💊 Treatment requires deworming treatment and there are two strategies available to address the encysted larvae (which are the clinically important stage)…
✅ Moxidectin (single dose) or
✅ A fenbendazole “PowerPack” (one treatment every day for 5 days)
Both can both target encysted larvae 🥳
But… here’s the parasite plot twist 😲…
😭 These parasites are now resistant to multiple anthelmintics and unfortunately this includes widespread resistance to fenbendazole globally… so this treatment may not work in every horse 🐴

💉Over-deworming accelerates resistance and worsens long-term control of parasites. We recommend deworming with f***l egg count results in mind, and with the guidance of your veterinarian 🩺

It’s tiiiiiiiiiiime 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
‘Tis the season and we are so excited to report our first foal born at the UC Davis Large Animal Clinic last week using our foal watch service. This little filly was born under the watchful eye of our amazing theriogenology service as well our medicine team who performed a thorough evaluation to ensure she was healthy, and met all the major milestones following birth!
Please join us in welcoming this filly to the world 😍👏
