In the first part of Gracie’s 3rd lesson we worked on a DISTANCE STAY. After that we started applying some mild distractions to level up her stay.

The key 🔑 to quickly helping your puppy learn stay is to make sure you break up your stay into sections (DURATION, DISTANCE, DISTRACTIONS), practice the different kinds and then combine them.

If your puppy breaks their stay (gets up before they should) I like to verbally correct them (a soft UH OH OR SOMETHING similar) and then guide them back to where they were supposed to be and then pick up where you left off.

If you want a solid stay.,. This is how you start to get that.

DO NOT FORGET TO RELEASE YOUR DOG! THE okay! You hear Gracie’s mom say is telling Gracie she can get up now. I’ll make a stay rules video next week…. Drop a comment if you want to be notified when it’s out 🐶

Most people miss this opportunity when they play with their puppy or when the puppy is playing solo. …

They don’t add training or reinforcement.

In a training session you might remember to add rewards but in real life when you’re interacting with your puppy you probably don’t as often as you should. Playtime is a great time to practice having your puppy DROP their toys. If your puppy is chewing on a toy or bone that’s another great time to ask your puppy to DROP what they have and reward them.

If you only reward during training your puppy will figure out real life isn’t the same as a training session and you’ll notice less responsiveness and compliance in real life.

Something so simple can make such a big difference ✨

Sweet little Gracie just finished her third puppy private lesson. In this clip she is working on her”Down Stay” with distance and duration. Stay can be super challenging for a young puppy and we think Gracie knocked it out of the park!

What’s that? You didn’t hear Gracie being told to STAY? That’s because we teach stationary positions like sit and down as an IMPLIED stay. Once she was told to DOWN that meant “don’t get up until you’re released”…. Clear training = great results.

Yes, even boy dogs have ni***es 😂

I encounter this question pretty often and I’m happy to answer it. I think new puppy parents should be super comfortable asking questions (no matter how dumb they think the question might be). The ni***es are often mistaken for ticks, skin issues or allergies and it’s better to ask than not.

Here’s one way I teach a puppy to ring potty bells. This puppy was being very cautious/ was nervous about the bells when we started so “catching” and “shaping” this behavior/ trick was best to help the puppy gain confidence and stay in control of the training game.

Pro tip: I don’t teach potty bells until AFTER the puppy is pretty much potty trained. If you teach bells too early you can accidentally teach your puppy to ring the bells to go outside in general, not just to potty. If you wait until the puppy has a good understanding of potty training then they will usually understand the bells are for potty breaks only and not just going outside.

I think a lot of people have a hard time “catching” (waiting for the puppy to offer the behavior) because they (the human) get impatient. But this is sometimes the best way for the puppy to gain confidence and understanding.

Did you teach your puppy potty bells? Do they use the bells to ONLY ask to potty or do they use the bells to go outside for whatever?

I like to have my daughter test some of the training we have done with our board & train and day training puppies to make sure the training transfers nicely. This was Poppy’s first time working for my daughter and as you can see she had no issue understanding what she was supposed to do.

How does your puppy do when someone else asks for a behavior? Are they responsive?
