What a time in the Virginia Highlands! Clarity's Distance Team closed out August at Iron Mountain Jubilee hosted from the beautiful Triple C Farm.

Friday Katie on Taxi and Junior Olivia on Estrella had a perfect start heading out on the 50 mile course. The pairs had a quick first 14 mile loop before vetting and heading out for their second 22 mile loop. They were still all smiles and fresh ponies at the second hold. After a snack break, we sent them for their final 13.5 mile loop, taken at a more sedate pace for the sake of some millennial knees. Solid finishes all around with Olivia in 19th and Katie in 20th place.

Elizabeth on Ray with Kim finally making a ride on her own Trixie Mule headed out for Friday's 25 mile LD course. Our first loop rolled through the Virginia hills and then onto the rangeland. After the vet hold our pairs finished their second loop and pulsed down in 9th and 10th place. Congrats to Kim on completing your first LD ride!!

Saturday, Olivia proved she learned nothing from last year's IMJ endurance/ride and tie combo weekend, once again pairing with Megan and pony bestie Sheriff for the 14 mile Ride and Tie. The team had a fantastic time finishing strong.

We sent Ray and Trixie back on course to rack up a full 50 miles over both days. Saturday Brenda took over the ride on Ray and Elizabeth enjoyed gaiting along on Trixie Mule. We picked up a bonus Junior and her horse Storm for Saturday's LD. Our equines were fresher than ever and crushed the first loop. A lost shoe on the second loop meant a slow last few miles carefully alongside walking the gravel road, but all horses finished sound and bright!

Fun-o-meter not filled by 50 miles, Katie stole the ride on Estrella for Saturday's 11 mile Intro ride with Junior Katherine up on Taxi. The pairs breezed through the course with horses again stronger on day two.

Thank you to Brenda, Katherine, Lainey, Kim, Gwynn, Audrey, and Audrey for crewing. Thank you to Nancy and the IMJ crew for perfect trail, welcoming base camp, and the best ride meals.

Congratulations to Fireball and Elizabeth on a great trip down centerline at the VADA Summer Wind Down at Morven Park. The pair rode Intermediate 1 for 61.618%.

Fireball gets better and better as he grows stronger and more confident in FEI work. He's always a pleasure to show, no fuss, no stress, easy to sit and great in the bridle. We're excited to see how far Fireball goes!

Thank you to Shoshana for grooming and videoing, yes Fireball's white legs are actually white! Thanks to Jesseanne for trusting us with Fireball's development. Thank you to Noel Williams for sharing your knowledge with us!

Fireball is available for sale!

The summer's last Twilight Eventing at Loch Moy Farm ended on a high note for Clarity's riders!

Elizabeth and homebred Morgan Ray had their best go around Starter yet with a solid dressage test, clean stadium round in which Elizabeth remembered that canter leads exist, and Elizabeth's bravest run through cross-country including the scary brush jump. Once again, Ray was perfect and did his job like he was born and bred to.

Elana and her OTSTB Ozzie also competed at Starter. The pair put down their best dressage test to date with nice transitions, both leads, and round circles. Following up with Ozzie's interpretative dance style stadium round and a clean and bold run around cross-country, Elana and Ozzie finished their first full run at Starter. Thank you for flying AirOzwald!

Thank you to Lauren for grooming and coaching (yes even coaches need coaching). Thank you to Loch Moy Farm and volunteers, Twilight Eventing is the best Eventing!

Five of Clarity's Distance Team juniors and young riders were selected to participate in this year's Old Dominion Junior/Young Rider Clinic. Over the course of the week our riders learned from a variety of topnotch clinicians, rode world class horses, and built lasting friendships.

Thank you to all the generous horse owners for sharing your lovely mounts, to the clinicians and speakers for sharing your knowledge and experience, and to Teri and the entire Old Dominion Endurance crew for hosting.

The Morgans went wild and decided to try a hand (hoof?) in the hunter ring at the Howard County Fair to support Blue Ridge Arabian Horse Association and Sweet Rock Stables.

No surprise to anyone, Sam and her wonder pony HD Bliss led the way taking 1st in Conformation, Pleasure, GAYP, Open and the Championship round. She added a 2nd in Equitation and two 3rds in Trail. The pair came home with quite a ribbon bouquet!

Following big cousin Bliss's winning example, Throwing Shade with Lauren riding dipped their toes into hunter-land collecting 4th across the board in Pleasure, GAYP, Open and Trail. Eventing may be more fun according to Ray, but he continues to be perfection in every venue.

Sam and Lauren enjoyed a great outing with the UVM Springfield cousins in the arena together. Thank you Roxy Baldwin for putting on a great show!

Have you ever wanted to try something new? The best way is find a clinic - approachable, inviting, and educational. This year was coach Lauren's second time putting on the Intro to Fox Chasing Clinic at Marlborough Hunt Club with lots of help from like-minded friends and club members. With just over one month to get entries and put it all together, Lauren and crew hustled to create an amazing experience.

Trying a new discipline can be very intimidating and that holds extra true when other horses, hounds, and an open field are involved. Despite a few nerves, our novice fox chasers practiced their trot and canter in a open field of horses keeping up with the field masters. It didn't take long for everyone to settle into the rhythm - and then we added the hounds!

At this point everyone had found a new sense of trust and relaxation with themselves and their horse and they got to enjoy one of the coolest experiences, working with the Huntsman and hounds! After the riding portion, it was time for lunch and discussions on traditions, rules, enjoyment of the sport and of course making new friends!

We had a stellar turnout of 20 riders, from fox chasing experienced to those had no idea what they had just gotten into. We were thrilled to welcome all, including 4 juniors riders, to the ranks of new fox chasing enthusiasts!

Big thank you to everyone involved, volunteers on the ground and on horseback, our patient horses, the Masters, Marlborough's Huntsman and the hounds of Marlborough Hunt Club! Thank you to everyone at Clarity that makes it possible for Lauren to go do the things that she loves!

“I accidentally signed up for …” is peak Elizabeth. In this instance, “I accidentally signed up to do my longest Ride and Tie ever (20 miles) with R&T legends Janice (the winningest and highest mileage R&T runner) and her horse Rushcreek Bobby (fully fledged person, snack connoisseur, PhD in hooman studies) and somehow managed to sign up for not one, but two days of 20-mile Ride and Ties over this August’s OD Ride and Tie weekend.”

OD Ride and Tie weekend starts with a clinic for new athletes followed by a Saturday night competition and then a Sunday morning competition. Estrella came along as a lease horse for Kelly and new Ride and Tie athlete Christina.

Arriving at OD basecamp Saturday late afternoon, Elizabeth got Estrella settled and vetted before getting dressed for the 20-mile Ride and Tie with Bobby and Janice. Starting at 6pm, the teams headed out on course. Elizabeth wanted no part of tying in/near/around the infamous OD ant hills, so Janice took the first ride so Bobby could be safely tied. From there, we kept up with ties for Elizabeth and flying ties for Janice most of the course. About an hour in the humidity started to drop making things more pleasant. Climbing the infamous OD Beast of the East (smaller version) to Bird Haven, we modified to shorter ties to give everyone better breaks. We took a few turns coming down the fire road to break up the downhill and cruised through Bird Haven as dark was really settling in. Now in Elizabeth’s favorite riding time with cooler and drier air, Bobby picked up the pace.

Before we knew it, we were coming up to Shrinemont and greeted by the sounds of an outdoor concert. Due to the terrain, it seemed a bit like the music was moving or coming from all directions at times. Horse and human were of slightly different opinions if this was cool or not. Janice took Bobby along to the ant-free tie zone then ran into finish. Elizabeth caught up to Bobby and rode into finish, completing the 20-mile course at about 10pm in first place!

Estrella and teammates Kelly and Christina had a great time on the 12-mile course. Estrella felt the need to live up to her ‘spicy’ and ‘likes to go fast’ reputation by taking an unapproved jaunt into Bird Haven to look for snacks (no snacks were found) before being reunited with her 2-legged teammates for the second half of the course. Trial by fire for first time Ride and Tier Christina, but apparently not enough to scare her off! Hijinks aside, Estrella and team finished the 12-miler in first place!

What do you do when you’ve just won the longest Ride and Tie of your life? Well, take a 5-hour nap and do it all again! Sunday morning Bobby graciously agreed to run around the woods with Janice and Elizabeth for another 20 miles. This time the course was ‘backwards’ with the long climb going up the fire road and then downhill for OD’s famous rocks. Bobby did not approve this course change and was offended. Elizabeth tried hiking down with him, but this still did not meet standards. Emotional support carrots were offered, accepted, but did not change Bobby’s emotional status. Eventually, Elizabeth had to sternly speak Bobby’s full government name. We finally made it to the bottom of the climb and remounted to go find poor Janice, who had been on foot for about 4 miles by this point. Bobby cantered some lovely sandy bits, found his mom, and was immediately disappointed when it wasn’t time for a tie break.

The last few miles cruised by with short ties, once again negotiating around the ant hills, and Janice outrunning Bobby and Elizabeth into finish again. Despite competing against fresh legs, Bobby is such a superstar that he once again won the 20-mile Ride and Tie on Sunday for Janice and Elizabeth, with only about 30 minutes extra time over Saturday.

Meanwhile, Estrella developed some chill and cruised through her second day on the 12-mile course with teammates Kelly and Christina. Ironically to Estrella, but not anyone else, it is actually faster to be cooperative than 100%MARE and the team cut their completion time in half! Not to be outdone by Bobby, Estrella also won her ride on Sunday.

Thank you to Rushcreek Bobby, honorary Morgan, the GOAT, for 40 awesome miles. Thank you to Janice for sharing Bobby, inviting Elizabeth, and generally being a legend. Thank you to Bob for the PBJ at finish, hot water in the shower, and super cool custom awards. Thanks to Kelly and the rest of the volunteers for hosting OD Ride and Tie Weekend. Thanks to Kelly and Christina for taking such good care of Estrella.

Kicking off August with another Combined Test at Fence Post Farm, Clarity's Jumper Team had a busy morning with four riders in the pre-Intro division. Lots of firsts in the group, and everyone rose to the occasion beautifully. Shannon and Harley, now getting to be pros at this combined test thing, led the group with a solid dressage test and a CLEAR jump round. Amanda and her young horse Link followed by Colette and Mic rode their first combined tests ever, and Lainey and Sammy rode for the first time at this level. All pairs showed dressage tests to be proud of and clear jumping rounds.

We collected a beautiful bouquet of ribbons, with Lainey finishing 1st, Colette 2nd, Shannon 4th, and Amanda 5th (Are the ribbons in the group photo confusing? Yes, there was a small error in placings which was corrected after we’d already taken our fab photo).

Not to be outdone by the morning crew, Liam and Java moved up to Starter level in the afternoon, laying down an accurate and harmonious dressage test followed by a smooth stadium round with a single rail down. With such a strong dressage score, that single rail wasn’t enough to knock them out of first place, and they finished with another pretty blue ribbon.

Thank you to Fence Post Farm and volunteers for hosting us. Thanks to Katie and Lauren for coaching and to Liz for being our show mom for the day!

July’s Twilight Eventing at Loch Moy turned into an instructor play day. Lauren, Gabby, and Katie all went skipping off to Adamstown to take Ray, Barley, and Mic for a field trip. Elana and Dawn met us there with Ozzie and Ford, foolishly thinking we have good ideas.

Ray and Mic enjoyed a super fun bestie brothers Beginner Novice adventure, with ride times mere moments apart for all 3 phases. Remarkably, the duo kept their attention spans largely intact as they rode synchronized dressage tests in neighboring rings and followed each other through the jumping phases. Ray had a successful step up to the Beginner Novice level with Lauren, and Mic continued to show growth since his last outing with Katie.

Gabby took her own Barley Twist out at the Starter level for his first 3 phase adventure, and though we didn’t see their dressage test with our own eyes, we did see them after, so we know they survived. Cheers to Gabby for entertaining us during their stadium round by madly giggling from fence 3 to the finish line. The pair enjoyed a nice romp around the cross country course to finish off a successful debut.

Elana and Ozzie rode their best dressage test ever, followed sadly by a horseshoe mishap that kept them out of the jumping phases.

Dawn and Ford debuted at Starter and did all the things in the correct order while hitting peak forelock in three phases. Ford is dangerously close to becoming a solid citizen.

Thanks to Lainey, our videographer for the day!

Familiar and not familiar, this July's PVDA schooling show was hosted by Bit O Faith farm, what we used to lovingly know as Exalt Farm.

Flashing back to Third Level, Elizabeth and Fireball rode through Third 2 in a snaffle for 63.68% earning 2nd place in the Second and Above division. Shannon and Harley debuted their new super fun First Level freestyle featuring whimsical music from Ratatouille. Despite an early bobble caused by technical difficulties with the music (read, Elizabeth doesn't know how to adjust volume), Harley danced through his new choreography for 1st place in the Freestyle division. Rounding out Team Clarity, Lydia and Cash returned to the show ring at Intro with some highs and some lows, but overall happy to be back!

Thank you to Marcia Mia for managing, Bit O Faith for hosting, and to teammates Lauren and Shannon for volunteering for the show.
