🐾 Read the Tongue: Your Dog’s Cooling System Is Talking to You
Most people watch a dog’s tail. Trainers watch the tongue.
A dog’s tongue, panting pattern, gum color, and recovery time can tell you when they’re simply warm, exhausted, overheating, or heading toward a medical emergency.
🟢 Normal Exercise Panting
✔ Tongue hangs slightly out
✔ Pink tongue and gums
✔ Panting slows within a few minutes of rest
✔ Dog remains alert and responsive
This is normal body temperature regulation. Dogs don’t sweat like humans. They cool themselves primarily through panting.
🟡 Overworked & Exhausted
🐾Tongue becomes longer and wider (“spoon-shaped”)
🐾Excessive drooling
🐾Panting becomes deeper and faster
🐾Dog seeks shade or lies down frequently
🐾Slower response to commands
At this stage, your dog is telling you they’re reaching their limit.
🔻What to do:
🚨Move to shade immediately.
🚨Stop all activity.
🚨Allow calm, controlled breathing.
🚨Offer small amounts of cool water.
🟠 Beginning to Overheat
🚨Very wide tongue extending far out of the mouth
🚨Bright red gums and tongue
🚨Heavy drooling
🚨Glassy eyes
🚨Staggering or weakness
🚨Seeking cool surfaces
Your dog is no longer just tired. Their body is struggling to dump heat.
What to do:
* Move to air conditioning or deep shade.
* Wet paws, groin, belly, and armpits with cool water.
* Use fans if available.
* Contact a veterinarian if symptoms don’t improve quickly.
🔴 Heatstroke Emergency
🚨 Dark red, purple, or pale gums
🚨 Vomiting or diarrhea
🚨 Disorientation
🚨 Collapse
🚨 Seizures
🚨 Unresponsiveness
Heatstroke can become fatal very quickly.
Seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
‼️Why You Shouldn’t Let an Overheated Dog Chug Water‼️
This surprises many people.
When a dog is extremely overheated, exhausted, and breathing hard:
❌ Chugging large amounts of water can cause vomiting.
❌ Vomiting can worsen dehydration.
❌ Rapid drinking while gasping can increase the risk of aspiration (water entering the airway).
❌ The stomach can become overly distended, adding stress to an already strained body.
Instead:
✅ Offer small amounts frequently.
✅ Allow the dog to settle their breathing first.
✅ Focus on external cooling (shade, cool surfaces, fans, cool water on the body).
Think “cool the dog first, hydrate gradually.”
🔻Quick Tongue Guide
👅 Light Pink = Normal
👅 Long/Wide Spoon Tongue = Working Hard
👅 Bright Red Tongue = Overheating
👅 Dark Red/Purple Tongue = Emergency
👅 Pale or White Tongue = Medical Emergency
Remember: Dogs often keep working long after they’re tired because they love the activity, their job, or their owner. It is our responsibility to recognize when enthusiasm is masking exhaustion. We do it ourselves pushing!
“A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a dog is okay. Sometimes the tongue tells the real story.”
Temperature and Humidity also matters in their routines, and regulations. Another post will be coming next to break that down as well! Be sure to follow for these good pointers to remember this summer!
