MOAS Pets Welcome to the Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter, better known as MOAS. We have been in existence since 2002. But we can't do all of this without you!

Our mission is to save as many pets as possible while reducing the unwanted pet population through a low-cost spay and neuter clinic operated out of the shelter. We take our role seriously, and we are excited about the many community initiatives that we are able to offer to assist in reducing pet overpopulation and to provide better care for family pets. These initiatives include our monthly low-cost vaccine clinics, our low-cost spay/neuter program, our assistance with trapping and altering feral cats, our community pet food bank, and more! MOAS is solely responsible for running the shelter and relies on a volunteer Board of Directors to set shelter policy and to raise necessary funds. We also partner with regional rescue groups and other local shelters to collaborate on ways that we can all work together to improve the outcomes for people and their pets. We need your help to continue to offer these services and to help us expand our programs in the future. Some of the ways that you can help are by donating money or supplies, volunteering, supporting our special events throughout the year like our annual Bark & W**e fundraiser, and advocating for our shelter pets in the community. With your help, we are making a difference in the lives of the precious animals entrusted to our care. So come out to the shelter and adopt a great pet. Or if your home is full but your heart still has some room, come out and foster or volunteer. You might also consider donating to help with the medical needs of our most vulnerable animals. Our Guardian Angel Fund exists to help pay for medical treatment for injured or ill animals that are brought to us. Please also keep us in mind as you plan your annual giving. Setting up a one-time or monthly donation to either our general fund or our Guardian Angel Fund is quick and easy. Any assistance is always appreciated by the staff and especially the animals. We are CLOSED on Mondays and TUESDAYS (Except for scheduled surgeries)! No Exceptions! Intake/Surrender Hours: Wednesdays - Sunday 12 Noon - 1 hour PRIOR to closing
Adoption Hours: Sun & Tues 12:00pm-4:00pm and Wed - Sat 12:00pm-5:00pm
Surgery Hours: By Appointment Only (Drop off is between 8:30-9:00am)

Yesterday, we took in 7 dogs. And as much as we love being here for the animals who need us, the reality is that we are running out of room.

We have so many good dogs here waiting for their chance. Sweet faces, goofy personalities, playful puppies, and dogs who would love nothing more than to have a family to call their own. They all deserve that chance.

Our cat intakes and adoptions are temporarily closed because of panleuk, but we are still open for dog adoptions. If you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your family, please consider coming out to see us. You might just find the one you’ve been looking for.

We do have a temporary change to our hours. Because of a staff shortage, we will be closed to the public on Saturdays for the time being. Adoptions will still be available on our other usual days.

Wednesday–Friday: 12–5 PM Sunday: 12–4 PM

If adopting isn’t an option right now, sharing our posts helps more than you know. You never know who might see one of these faces and decide they’re the one.

We’re dealing with panleuk again on our cat side, which means we have to temporarily close to all cat intakes and adoptions while we work through this and protect the cats in our care.
We hate having to do this, especially when there are already so many cats and kittens needing help. We’ll keep everyone updated as we know more, and we appreciate your patience while we navigate this.
Our dog side is still open! Dog intakes: Wednesday–Thursday, 12–4 PM Dog adoptions: Wednesday–Sunday
While we’re dealing with this, we also want to remind everyone of two really important things.
Please vaccinate your cats. Panleuk is a highly contagious virus that can be deadly, especially for kittens and unvaccinated cats. Keeping your cats up to date on their vaccinations is one of the best ways to protect them.
We also want to talk about community cats. If you’re putting food out for stray cats, please help us get them spayed or neutered.
We know you’re feeding them because you care, and we’re thankful people want to help animals in need. But feeding alone doesn’t stop the cycle. Without spaying and neutering, more kittens keep being born into a world where disease, overcrowding, and limited resources are already major problems.
Feeding stray cats and need help getting them fixed? Reach out to us! We can talk with you about assistance and options that may be available.
We can all make a difference by protecting the cats already here and preventing more unwanted litters.

Hank needs a foster or adopter. ❤️
Hank is back with us, and honestly, we really want to change that as quickly as we can.
Hank is about a year old and around 35 pounds. He’s a short legged little guy with a LOT of energy and an even bigger personality.
Hank originally went to a rescue, but he started really struggling in a kennel environment. He was returned to us, and we’re hoping the interest he had while he was here before is still out there because Hank needs a chance outside of the shelter.
Hank can come on strong when meeting a new dog. He has a lot of energy and excitement, but he does get along with other dogs once they get acquainted. He is not a fan of cats, so a cat free home will be best for him.
What Hank really needs right now is a foster or adopter who can give him some time outside of the kennel and let him decompress. We have a feeling there is a whole lot more to this goofy little guy than what we’re seeing in a shelter environment.
We’d love to see Hank heading into a home as soon as possible. If you have room for this short legged, big personality kind of guy, please consider giving Hank his chance. ❤️

We’re looking for Kennel Technicians to join our team, and we’re hiring for dogs, cats, and puppies!
Let’s be honest about this job.
It’s not all puppy kisses and kitten cuddles. There is A LOT of cleaning. Kennels need to be scrubbed, laundry needs to be washed, bowls need to be filled, floors need to be mopped, p**p needs to be scooped, and there will always be at least one animal who decides to make your day a little more interesting. 😂
It can be loud. It can be messy. Some days are exhausting. Some days are emotional. You will get dirty. You will probably go home covered in fur. And yes, you may occasionally question how one tiny puppy managed to create that much chaos.
But then...
A scared dog finally trusts you.
A cat who wouldn't come near anyone starts reaching for your hand.
A puppy learns that people are safe.
An animal you've cared for walks out the door with their forever family.
And suddenly all the cleaning, barking, meowing, laundry, muddy footprints and questionable smells feel pretty darn worth it. ❤️
We’re looking for dependable people who are willing to work hard, get dirty, learn, and care. Shelter experience is great, but we're willing to teach the right person.
If you love animals and understand that caring for them means doing the glamorous AND very unglamorous parts, we’d love to have you on our team.

Today’s Victim: The Entire Staff

Hello, peasants.
It has been a WEEK.
I supervised kitten playtime in the catio because apparently someone has to keep the tiny clawed toddlers under control.
I also snuck through the intake door while the humans were bringing in new animals.
I needed to inspect the situation.
There were A LOT.
Honestly, I feel like I should be added to the intake paperwork at this point.
The weather has finally cooled off and I am LOVING it. Cooler mornings. Cooler evenings. Finally, some civilized temperatures.
And since winter is coming, I have decided it is time to begin my winter weight journey.
Yes, I know it is not winter yet.
That's why we need to start now.
You cannot wait until winter to acquire winter weight. That's just poor planning.
Please increase my meal portions accordingly.
Also, several employees were on vacation this week.
VACATION.
Imagine leaving the shelter to go have fun while I am here supervising kittens, inspecting intakes and maintaining order.
Who approved this?
If you're looking for a job helping animals, working with a great team and being supervised by a feral cat with questionable authority...
We're still hiring.
And then I met Otis Saturday.
Normally, I would have given him a pop. It's how I conduct introductions.
But I was exhausted.
I looked at him. He looked at me.
He didn't seem like a threat.
He seemed like a genuinely good dog.
And frankly, I did not have the energy to waste a perfectly good pop on him.
So I have one question:
WHY IS OTIS STILL HERE?
I have rejected dogs for less.
If I didn't pop him, people need to get moving.
I'm tired of doing everyone's job around here.
