It was a busy weekend for the at Virginia Horse Center Foundation Eventing — and I think all of us are still drying out after riding through sideways rain most of the weekend.

Adara and I finished 4th in the Open Novice, and I was really proud of how she handled the conditions. HH Like No Otter also came along for the weekend and handled his first overnight big show experience like a total professional. He slid into the ditch (he’s barefoot) so will let slide (literally). He is currently still napping as apparently being five years old is exhausting work.

Kyra and Excel Star Wildwood had a great weekend as well, finishing 2nd in the Senior Beginner Novice. This is still a relatively new partnership, and it’s been exciting watching them learn each other and grow more confident together every outing. Josephine Gomon and her own Looks Don’t Lie also added to the weekend success with a 6th place finish in the Beginner Novice Horse division.

And the excitement didn’t stop when the horse show ended — we got home just in time to welcome my newest ride, Ferguson (sourced by Pegazon.horsesPegazon.horses from Germany. I’m very excited to start getting to know this talented horse and introduce him to the sport of eventing.

Young horses usually jump better when you let them go forward and solve the question in front of them.

In this lesson, we introduced a new “spooky” jump and let him figure it out with a bit of confidence and momentum. He handled it beautifully.

Sometimes, the best help you can give them is simply letting them land and go somewhere.

Spring always seems to bring a little extra along with it—longer days, more turnout… and the inevitable leg scurf that comes with it.

Staying ahead of it really comes down to consistency. Regular bathing helps keep their skin clean and comfortable, especially as it gets warmer. I like using Dapple Up because it’s made with naturally derived, essential oil–based ingredients, so it’s effective without being harsh on the horses’ skin.

A good warmup is never wasted.

We spend a lot of time in the beginning of lessons working on transitions within the gait — helping horses become more adjustable, more balanced, and more attentive to their riders.

The jumping always gets the attention, but the real work happens long before the first fence.

(And Bear is always nearby making sure everyone is doing it correctly.)

Some pieces just earn their place in your daily routine—and for me, that’s the Gabrielle breeches from KL Select .

They’re comfortable enough for long days in the saddle and around the barn, but still structured enough to feel put together when you’re teaching or heading out to a show. They move with you, hold up to the wear, and don’t get in the way of the ride.

And the colors… let’s just say I’ve collected almost every one at this point. It’s hard not to when they’re this good.

As the questions get bigger, the details matter more.

This time of year, we’re asking the horses to step up—whether that’s moving up a level, adding complexity, or simply putting more together in a round. Having tack that supports both balance and freedom of movement makes a real difference in how clearly they can answer those questions.

For me, it always comes back to feel. When the horse is comfortable and the rider is balanced, the work starts to speak for itself. Which is why I ride in Voltaire Design USA & Canada .

Introducing angles to a young horse is really about helping them understand where they’re going.

With Otter, we started simple — clear lines, and plenty of time to think about the question.

The goal is confidence, not cleverness.

There’s a difference you can feel when the horses are truly comfortable in their bodies.

With the workload picking up this time of year, I’m especially mindful of how they’re feeling day to day. Having Tatiana from Royal Hands Equine Services out regularly gives me another set of educated hands on the horses—someone who can feel the small things before they become big ones.

I've been riding with the KL Select reins for years now, and they're the kind of tack I don't think about — which is exactly what you want.

Rubber grip that stays consistent whether it's 90 degrees and humid, or 30 and pouring rain. They don't get slippery, they don't stretch out, and I trust them on course when I need to be able to half-halt and rebalance without second-guessing my grip.
