Do you have a first aid kit for your pet?

Most of us have one for ourselves, but when it comes to our animals, having a few basic supplies on hand can be a big help.

A simple starter list of items to keep on hand looks something like this:

-- Gauze and vet wrap for bandaging wounds
-- Saline solution for cleaning scrapes and flushing eyes
-- Fine-tipped tweezers for splinters or foreign objects
-- A thermometer to monitor your pet's temperature
-- Instant ice pack for minor swelling
-- Pet-safe antihistamine for allergic reactions (ask your vet about dosage first)
-- Disposable gloves
-- A copy of your pet's medical records and emergency contact numbers

Ticks are a real concern in Texas, especially during the warmer months. Knowing how to check your pet thoroughly and what to do if you find one is an important part of keeping them safe.

Check your pet after every outdoor adventure, paying close attention to warm, hidden areas like the ears, neck, between the toes, and under the tail:

1. Part the fur all the way down to the skin
2. If you find a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers and grip as close to the skin as possible
3. Pull straight up with steady, even pressure (do not twist or jerk, as this may cause parts of the tick to break off and remain in the skin)
4. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water after removal
5. Save the tick in a sealed bag or container in case your vet needs to identify it

Meet Castor (left), Artemis (right), and their dog dad, Caleb! They are our neighbors right here in Uptown and can be seen regularly, strutting their stuff on the Katy Trail.

Castor and Artemis were absolute pros for their house call. They happily ate their pup cups and were so well-behaved for their blood draws, vaccines, the whole thing!

This is exactly what we want DVC to be: a hyper-local veterinary concept built around the people, pets, and neighborhoods we call home. More local, more treats, and less stress! 🐾 🐶 🍭

Dr. Olson spent years working the ER in Dallas and he saw too many cases of parvo, distemper, and leptospirosis that didn't have to happen. Vaccines are one of the most powerful tools we have to keep pets healthy, and we want every DVC family to feel confident about their pet's protection.

Here are a few things worth knowing:

-- The core vaccines recommended for all dogs are Rabies, DHPP, and Leptospirosis
-- Rabies is legally required in Texas and still active in local wildlife, including bats, skunks, and raccoons
-- Lepto is spread through the urine of small mammals like mice, squirrels, and raccoons, which means it's in virtually every yard in Dallas
-- Distemper can be airborne and is carried by coyotes and feral animals throughout the area
-- For pet parents who prefer a conservative schedule, core vaccines can be spaced to every three years when pets are kept current
-- Titers are available to help guide decisions before revaccinating for DHPP and lepto
-- Adverse reactions are rare, and Dr. Olson's vaccine supplier covers the cost if one does occur

Meet Varic, Dallas Veterinary Concierge's Pet of the Month! 🐾

Varic is an eight-year-old German Shepherd with a very specific set of interests. He's a dedicated TV watcher who barks at every animal on screen (real or cartoon) and has mastered the art of carrying two toys at once. His nightly routine involves a frozen green bean broken into exactly three pieces, and on hot days, you'll find him cooling off on the top step of the pool.

His mom, Laura, had this to say about their experience with Dr. Olson:

"Dr. Olson brings such a calm, caring presence into our home, and Varic immediately connected with him. It's obvious how much he genuinely loves animals, and the convenience and reduced stress of in-home care has been wonderful."

For Throwback Thursday, we go back to May 15, 2020, when Dr. Olson saw his very first patient.

Fritz, a seven-year-old miniature Dachshund, came into the ER feeling under the weather. He was a little lethargic and didn’t have much of an appetite. Dr. Olson gave him some fluids, something for nausea, and sent him home with some GI-friendly dog food.

In that first month alone, Dr. Daniel treated corneal ulcers, spinal injuries, a coyote attack, a blood transfusion, and just about everything in between. It was a crash course in the full spectrum of veterinary medicine.

Hey, it’s not every day you get to see your community from a helicopter pad 😎

A huge thank you to Parkland Health for hosting tonight’s QEO dinner with the LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. We had a good dialogue, made some new connections, and took in one of the best views of Dallas I’ve had!

I leave these conversations with new ideas that help me raise the standard of care I provide to my patients and their families here in Dallas 👨🏻‍⚕️

Summers in Dallas are no joke! And for our pups and cats, the heat can turn dangerous fast, so try to keep them cool. Avoid walks during peak heat hours, never leave pets in a parked car, and provide fresh water and shade.

Also, make sure you know the signs of heat stroke, which can look like:

-- Excessive panting
-- Drooling
-- Lethargy
-- Vomiting
-- Collapse or seizure

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, act quickly. Move them to a cool, shaded area, offer small amounts of water, and apply cool (not cold) water to their paws, belly, and neck. Then call your veterinarian immediately.

Meet our Pet of the Month: Teddy Stoddard!

At just 3 months old, Teddy is living life at full speed. This American Bully pup has two main priorities: eating and playing. Although he’s just a pup, he’s already keeping up with the big dogs (and proud of it).

Teddy’s family chose Dallas Veterinary Concierge for easy access to care, which is something we pride ourselves on.

It’s our pleasure to be part of Teddy’s story as he grows. We can’t wait to see him again!
