How do you groom your dog at home? Start with these three essential dog grooming tips:

1️⃣ Brush before the bath. Water makes mats tighter, so work through tangles first. Use a detangling spray and a slicker brush, and go from the tips to the roots.
2️⃣ Keep bath time calm. Put down a non-slip mat, use lukewarm water and a pH-balanced dog shampoo, and have everything ready before you start. Dogs with oily coats may need a bath every month. Short-haired breeds can usually go a few months between baths.
3️⃣ Remember the finishing touches. Check nails, ears, and teeth as part of a regular routine. Floppy-eared breeds need their ears cleaned every two weeks. Teeth do best with daily brushing using enzymatic dog toothpaste.

Can you use human shampoo on dogs? No. Human products can dry out your dog's skin, so use a shampoo made for dogs.

What do your dog's paw pads say about their health?

Healthy paw pads feel firm, a little elastic, and smooth. They may be black, pink, or a mix of both. When your dog's paw pads look different, it's often an early sign that something needs attention.

Here's what to look for:
Cracked paw pads: Usually caused by dry air, dehydration, or walking on hot pavement or icy, salted sidewalks.
Red or inflamed paw pads: Often a sign of allergies, infection, or irritation from something your dog stepped on.
Crusty or thickened paw pads: Can come from normal wear. They can also point to nutrition problems or skin conditions that a vet should check.
Pink, soft, or black and elastic paw pads: Signs of healthy paws.

How often should you check your dog's paws? Once a week is a good habit, plus after walks in extreme heat or cold. When should you come see us? Book a visit if your dog is limping, licking their paws a lot, bleeding, or has swelling or cracks that don't heal within a few days.

How do cats show affection?
Cats show love quietly, through slow blinks, head bumps, and choosing to stay close to you.

Slow blinks: A relaxed, slow blink is a sign of trust. Try blinking slowly back to build your bond.
Head bumps: Cats have scent glands on their cheeks and heads. When your cat rubs against you, they're marking you as family.
Staying close: Napping beside you, sitting in your lap, or following you from room to room can all be your cat saying "I love you."

What is a pet wellness exam? It's a preventive vet visit — not a sick visit — focused on catching problems early, before they become emergencies.

Here's why they matter:
- Keep prevention on track — your vet personalizes vaccines, parasite protection, dental care, nutrition, and screenings to your pet's needs
- Build a healthier future — regular visits establish health baselines that support a longer, more comfortable life
- Catch problems early — wellness exams can uncover hidden issues (like dental disease, arthritis, or a heart murmur) before they affect your pet's comfort

How often should my pet have a wellness exam? Healthy adult pets need one annually. Puppies and kittens need several visits in their first few months, and senior pets or those with chronic conditions benefit from checkups twice a year.
Regular wellness exams are the simplest way to keep small problems from turning into expensive emergencies. Book your pet's next wellness exam with us today, and for more information, check out the full blog below!
