As Yom Kippur begins in the Jewish year 5787, we are brought again to the central reality of Scripture: a holy God cannot overlook sin, and no human being can cleanse himself before Him. This appointed day speaks with undiminished force: we need atonement, and God alone can provide it.
“For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord.” Leviticus 16:30
Yom Kippur required Israel to cease from work, humble the soul, and trust God’s prescribed provision. It was a prophetic declaration that sin cannot be solved by activity, moral effort, religious intensity, or self-justification. Blood was required because sin is serious, God is holy, and reconciliation must come on God’s terms.
“And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.” Hebrews 9:22
That is why Yeshua is the fulfillment toward which this day has always pointed. He is our Great High Priest and the spotless sacrifice. He did not enter an earthly sanctuary with the blood of another, but entered once for all by His own blood, obtaining eternal redemption.
“But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” Hebrews 9:11-12
At His first coming, Jesus came to bear sin. At His second coming, He will not come to bear sin again, but to reveal the salvation of those who eagerly wait for Him and to establish His righteous Kingdom.
“So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” Hebrews 9:28
Yom Kippur calls us beyond casual religion and self-made righteousness. It calls us to humble repentance, genuine faith, grateful reception of Messiah’s finished work, and holy readiness for the King’s return.
The blood has been provided. The veil has been opened. The High Priest lives. Let us come near with clean hands, a pure heart, and lives surrendered to Yeshua our Messiah.
