🐾 The History of the Pit Bull
The story of the Pit Bull goes back to 19th-century England, where bulldog- and terrier-type dogs were crossed to create strong, athletic, determined dogs. Unfortunately, some of their early history was tied to blood sports—something that would later play a major role in the reputation these dogs still struggle with today.
When immigrants brought these dogs to America, however, their story continued in a different direction. They became working farm dogs, protectors, hunting companions, and beloved family dogs. Their strength and determination made them capable workers, while their close relationship with people made them treasured companions.
Over time, irresponsible breeding, dog fighting, misuse, and frightening headlines helped create an image of the Pit Bull that often overshadowed the individual dog standing in front of us.
And maybe that’s the most important part of their history to remember. ❤️
A dog doesn’t get to choose the story people write about its breed.
Every dog deserves to be seen as an individual—to be given responsible ownership, proper training, socialization, kindness, and the opportunity to show us who they are.
Pit Bulls have a complicated history, but their story is still being written. 🐾💚
A long history. A loyal heart. A brighter future.

🐾 PIT BULL FRIDAY — Famous Pit Spotlight! 🎬

Recognize this face? 👀

Long before social media made dogs famous, Pete the Pup—better known as Petey—was stealing scenes in Our Gang, later known as The Little Rascals.

And that famous ring around his eye? Yep, that's part of what made Petey one of the most recognizable dogs in early Hollywood. 🎥🐶

Here's the really interesting part: Petey wasn't actually just one dog. The original role was played by Pal the Wonder Dog, and later Lucenay's Peter became one of the best-known dogs to take over the role.

Lucenay's Peter even holds a little piece of breed history—he was the first American Staffordshire Terrier registered by the American Kennel Club when the breed became recognized by the AKC.

So one of America's most recognizable canine stars was part of the history of the dogs we celebrate today during Pit Bull Awareness Month. ❤️🐾

Did you grow up watching The Little Rascals? And did you know Petey's story?

🐶 Is your dog bored?
A tired dog isn't always a dog who needs a longer walk!
Sniffing, problem-solving, searching for treats, learning something new and exploring new environments all give your dog's brain a workout too. 🧠🐾
Sometimes 15 minutes of mental enrichment can be exactly what your dog needs.
Work the brain, not just the legs! 💚
