We love snacking on cherries as much as anyone, but leaving them in eyes is where we draw the line! Cherry eyes are one of the most common reasons we see young pups in clinic, but thankfully look more scary than they are.

Typically one surgery is all that needed to replace the anatomy and get the pups back to looking like themselves again, while setting them up for healthy eyes in their future 🤗🐶👀🍒

We first met Diamond, the 13 year old Maltese, back in February when she had a perforated and infected ulcer that was at risk of further rupturing the globe.

After discussing both medical and surgical options with Diamond’s mom, she decided that trying to avoid surgery was the way to go. So then became the long 3.5 month long journey of eye drops, a cone, and dedication.

Each time we saw Diamond he eye looked much better than the prior visit - first with infection clearing, then active inflammation stabilizing the wound, and finally the inflammation reducing and having a stable, scarred eye that she can still see out of!

While surgery is a great option for quicker stabilization, sometimes the body and medical support works just as well. Diamond is now thriving once again, with two healthy eyes and fresh haircut. Animal eyes never cease to amaze us 🩵

We take pre-surgical puppy playtime VERY seriously around here, only the best for our patients 🩵

Salty got lots of snuggles throughout his day with us, and hopefully his eyes are already starting to feel better!

Applying eye drops seems like a difficult task but we have a few tips for you 👁️🐕

1. Have eye medications out and ready
2. It helps to have a helper
3. If #2 is impossible, find a nice corner area so your pet can’t run away. (Closet, sofa, bathroom, etc)
4. Secure your pet’s face with one hand, and have the bottle in the other hand.
5. Tilt the head upward and approach from the back or side of the face
6. *very important* Have a great treat available for the bestest pet!

✨Let us know if this helps! Kitty parents - you’re next!✨
