We are sure that by now, you have all heard about the New World Screwworm. We have had several clients asking questions about this, so we thought we would try to clarify how this may affect our dogs and cats. The screwworm fly lays eggs into fresh wounds on animals. These can be quite small wounds, even small punctures. The eggs develop into larvae (maggots) in the wound, and start feeding on the tissue. This is what makes these maggots so different. Normally, maggots only eat dead tissue, and do not pose such a threat to the animal. Thankfully, we can protect our pets from Screwworm infections with the monthly medications we already use to prevent ticks and fleas, like Nexgard. We can also use Capstar to treat an active infection, so we have the tools to prevent infestation already. Be vigilant about any injuries or wounds, and have them checked. We also recommend use of a monthly flea product in those pets who can take them. Please call us with any questions you may have.
